ADVANCED TRAINING
Pilot training grad
Air Force 2nd Lt. Darrell A. Walton of Salem graduated from the one-year Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training and was presented his pilot's wings during ceremonies at Laughlin AFB, Texas.
After additional training in fighter fundamentals at Moody AFB, Ga., Walton will report to Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., for final training in his career aircraft, the A-10 Thunderbold II, a fighter designed for close air support of ground forces.
Walton, a son of John and Kay Oster of Salem, graduated in 1997 from Salem High School, and in 2001 from the Air Force Academy.
Petroleum supply
Army Pvt. Michael L. Ciscell graduated from the petroleum supply specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Lee, Va.
He is the son of Thelma J. Kuban of Jamestown, Pa., and Paul H. Ciscell of Transfer, Pa., and is a 1996 graduate of Greenville High School, Pa.
Finishes field training
Patrick E. McBride has completed a five-week summer Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps field training encampment. McBride, a son of Teresa C. McBride of McDonald, is a student at Clarkson University, Potsdam, N.Y.
He graduated in 1996 from McDonald High School and received an associate degree in 2001 from the Community College of the Air Force.
Apprentice course
Air Force Airman 1st Class Shane R. Moffatt graduated from the aerospace maintenance (C-130 aircraft) apprentice course at Little Rock AFB, Ark. Moffatt is assigned to the 75th Airlift Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Kaiserslautern, Germany.
A son of Patricia A. Moffatt of New Castle, Pa., he graduated in 1994 from Shenango High School, New Castle, and received an associate degree in 1998 from Vale Technical Institute, Blairsville, Pa.
PROMOTIONS
Air Force colonel
Air Force Col. Norbert J. Diaz, son of Olga Diaz of Poland, was promoted to his present rank while assigned as assistant general counsel, Office of the General Counsel, Missile Defense Agency, in Washington, D.C.
Diaz graduated from Poland Seminary High School in 1972, earned a bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University in 1976 and his law degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1982.
In 1993, he received a master's degree in environmental law, with concentration in government acquisition law, from George Washington University. Diaz earned his commission through the Air Force Judge Advocate General Department's direct appointment program in 1983. He is married to the former Claudia J. Rafferty of Poland. They have three daughters and live in Fairfax, Va.
ENDURING FREEDOM
Serving six months
Several area residents are serving a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf. They include: Navy Petty Officer 1st Class David A. Walker, son of Dorothy E. and Raymond J. Walker of Mercer, Pa.; Navy Petty Officer 1st Class JoAnn Sutton, a 1974 graduate of Youngstown South High School; Navy Airman Scott W. Smith, son of Larry A. Smith of Wellsville; Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Mary K. Pfaff, daughter of Margaret A. and Michael J. Pfaff of Warren; Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class David M. Ours, son of Linda R. McCall of New Waterford, and Kenneth M. Ours of Lisbon; Navy Seaman Michael J. Ostrode, son of Sue and Bob Ostrode of Cortland; Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Tanya L.
