COLUMBIANA A grand way to volunteer at school

Grandparents have worked at the school from the start, an administrator says.
COLUMBIANA -- Heartland Christian School officials want to tap into a valuable energy source: the grandparents of Heartland pupils.
Administrator Dallas Lehman said school officials are forming a grandparents auxiliary as a volunteer organization.
"There's lots of energy here," Lehman said. "Grandparents want to be involved, and we want to facilitate that."
He said grandparents have been involved at Heartland from the start, assisting with fund-raising efforts and working in the cafeteria, playground and classrooms. One grandparent recently patched the asphalt parking lot, he said.
"We appreciate our grandparents, and we want to acknowledge their support and help them become more involved," Lehman said.
He hopes some grandparents will want to help organize the group; then, the group members can suggest the various ways they'd like to be involved.
Grandparents day
Last year was the first for a grandparents day at the school, Lehman said. Grandparents were treated to a luncheon and program, then sat in on classes with their grandchildren.
This year's grandparents day will be Oct. 26, and there will be a special emphasis on the grandparents auxiliary, he said.
Heartland Christian School is in its seventh year and has 248 pupils enrolled in preschool through 12th grades.
