Softball
CANFIELD -- Youngstown State will play host to a fall tournament this weekend at McCune Park on Shields Road.
The five visiting teams are St. Francis, Edinboro, LaRoche, Robert Morris and Clarion. YSU plays Edinboro Saturday at 11 a.m. and St. Francis at 1 p.m.
Elimination play begins Sunday at 9 a.m., with the championship game scheduled for 3 p.m.

BOARDMAN -- Two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin will be the guest speaker for the Easter Seals annual dinner Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Antone's Banquet Centre, 8578 Market St.

Area triathletescompete
Joe Sliman, 47, of Youngstown, placed 490th in the Wisconsin Ironman Triathlon in 11 hours, 49 minutes.
Corky Pike, 50, of Poland finished 1,460th in 14:39.
More than 1,800 athletes from 46 states and 21 countries competed in the 2.4-mile swimming event, 112-mile bike race and 26.2-mile run.
Finnerty namedathlete of week
CLEVELAND -- Matt Finnerty of Poland, a senior on the Case Western Reserve University cross country team from Cardinal Mooney High, has been named the University Athletic Association Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the second straight week.
Finnerty won the Muskingum College Invitational in 23 minutes, 18.63 seconds, over the 8-kilometer course, leading the Spartans to a share of team honors with Xavier.
Finnerty's win was his third in a row over consecutive weekends.
Tammy Newell selected by PAC
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College women's soccer standout Tammy Newell (Hubbard) was named player of the week in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Newell, a senior forward, had a hand in all four goals during the week as Westminster (2-4) went 2-0 with non-conference wins against Frostburg State (3-2) and Muskingum (1-0).
The Titans plays host to Heidelberg on Saturday at 2.

Actress agreesto plea bargain
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. -- Actress Tawny Kitaen agreed to a plea bargain on spousal abuse and battery charges alleging she attacked her husband, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chuck Finley.
Under the deal, Kitaen did not admit guilt but agreed to enter a spousal battery counseling program. If she completes the program and other conditions of the deal, the case could eventually be dropped.
LPGA playerscriticize Augusta
EDINA, Minn. -- A handful of LPGA Tour players believe it's time for Augusta National to open its membership to women.
They included U.S. Open champion Juli Inkster, U.S. Solheim Cup captain Patty Sheehan, Kelly Robbins, and Meg Mallon, who says Augusta National is different from most private clubs which exclude women because it plays host to such a high-profile event.

CHANGZHOU, China -- Lisa Leslie scored 20 points and Sheryl Swoopes added 19 to lead the United States to an 87-44 victory over Cuba in the Women's World Championship.
The defending champions are 4-0, and face South Korea in the second round today.
