LISBON -- A Lisbon woman is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in the death of a 12-year-old boy in a June 30 traffic accident.
Amanda Monigold, 18, of 13155 Cusick Road was arraigned Wednesday in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.
She pleaded innocent to the third-degree felony and is free on $10,000 bond.
Authorities say she was driving recklessly, which resulted in her Chevrolet Blazer's going off McCormick Run Road in Madison Township.
Her passenger, Trevor Smith, also of 13155 Cusick Road, was killed in the crash. The Ohio State Highway Patrol Lisbon Post investigated.
Leetonia trick-or-treat
LEETONIA -- Village council voted Wednesday to reinstate trick-or-treat night in the village. It will be from 5 to 7 Oct. 31.
The council decided to cancel trick-or-treat night last year as a precaution in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Police Chief John Soldano said village officials were concerned about children's safety in the days after the attacks and amid nationwide threats of anthrax contamination.
Drug indictment
PITTSBURGH -- A New Castle man has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge of violating federal narcotics laws. According to the indictment, Frank Christian, 29, of Neshannock Avenue is accused of distributing 0.175 ounces or more of crack cocaine.
Testimony revealed that Christian sold approximately one ounce of crack cocaine to a confidential source while sitting in his car in a parking lot in New Castle, according to the U.S. Attorney's office. U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents conducted audio and visual surveillance of the transaction.
Christian was ordered detained pending trial. He faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, including a mandatory minimum of five years, a fine of $2 million, or both. New Castle police participated in the investigation.
Truck stolen
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A flatbed tractor-trailer was stolen from the parking lot of the Red Apple Kwik Fill on New Butler Road. Shenango Township police said the truck was parked among other trucks and taken between 2 p.m. Sunday and 10:30 a.m. Monday.
It is owned by Stivason & amp; Sons Trucking Inc. in Apollo, Pa. The 1998 Transcraft 48-foot flatbed has an aluminum deck with steel frame and chrome wheels. The registration plate is Pa. XT-36306.
Ellwood City fire
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Firefighters are trying to determine how a blaze started at 608 North Street. Paul and Judy Johnston were not home when their two-story house caught fire at about 6 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters said.
Firefighters believe it started in the kitchen area and spread to a carport. The second floor had extensive heat and smoke damage, they said. Firefighters said the siding at 610 North Street melted during the blaze.
Charged with rape
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Police have charged a 16-year-old boy with raping a 12-year-old girl at a location on College Avenue. Police said the assault occurred around 3 a.m. Monday.
The boy is being held in detention and has been charged with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and aggravated indecent assault.
Recycling center
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A recycling center in the Shenango Valley Mall parking lot will open at 10 a.m. Saturday and be open 24 hours every day for the dropping off of newspapers, magazines, glass, aluminum, corrugated cardboard and plastic.
Mall officials said this new recycling center will replace the previous Saturday recycling programs held at the mall by the Mercer County Solid Waste Authority.
No burning
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Fire Chief James Donston reminds residents that the city's ban on burning because of drought conditions is still in effect.
The recent rains have not been enough to remove the state-designated drought restrictions that include no residential burning, he said. Anyone caught burning will be fined.
