Trustees to meetin Woodworth Park
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees will have their monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Woodworth Park. The change of venue is to showcase recent improvements made to the park.
Officials will also plant a tree in memory of all the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The park is on Luther Avenue off East Western Reserve Road, between Market Street and Southern Boulevard, just south of the Boardman Township line.
School board hires
COLUMBIANA -- Columbiana Board of Education hired: Doug Jackson of Columbiana as seventh-grade girls basketball coach, $1,407; Julie Schlueter, lunch room aide; Julie Wessling, student aide; and James Gray, lunch room aide and crossing guard. The aides are from Columbiana and will work on an as-needed basis at $8.01 per hour.
Requests to be trimmed
LISBON -- Columbiana County commissioners have the task of trimming about $1.4 million off 2003 budget requests submitted by county departments.
Meeting in special session Monday, commissioners announced the nearly $19.4 million in requests and noted that anticipated 2003 county revenues are about $18 million.
Requests and revenues must match so that the 2003 budget, typically adopted at the first of the year, balances.
Commissioner President Jim Hoppel said the 2003 revenues include an estimated $11.2 million to be generated by the county's 1.5 percent sales tax.
Teen revival
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Christian rap music, speakers and worship leaders will be on hand for a teen revival at the New Castle City Rescue Mission's Sankey Center, 125 Grant St. The event kicks off at 6:45 p.m. today and continues Wednesday and Thursday. Speakers include evangelist Janet Newell from Wind in the Word Ministries tonight, the Rev. Ivan Scott of Prayer Chapel on Wednesday and the Rev. Bill Beck of Barnstone Ministries on Thursday. Other participating churches include Revival Center and St. John United Holy Church.
POW-MIA ceremony
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Prisoners of War and those missing in action will be honored at a ceremony Thursday at the Lawrence County Government Center. The program starts at 11 a.m. in the front courtyard. The guest speaker will be Don Conti, chairman of the board of directors for the New Castle Area Transit Authority. A reception will follow in the first-floor lounge of the government center.
Any former prisoner of war living in Lawrence County who has not registered with the county is asked to call (724) 656-2137 or (724) 656-2180. The program is sponsored by the Lawrence County Commissioners, the county Department of Veterans Affairs and the Lawrence County Veterans Council.
Civil rights speaker
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Shenango Valley Initiative will hold its annual dinner banquet at 7 p.m. Friday at the Radisson Hotel on Pennsylvania Route 18. The Rev. Joseph Ellwanger, a civil rights activist, will speak. The Rev. Mr. Ellwanger began his career as a pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Birmingham, Ala., and took part in demonstrations in Selma and the Selma-to-Montgomery march in 1965. He was chosen by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to be part of a delegation that met with President Lyndon Johnson to urge swift passage of the Voting Rights Act.
