Home-buying workshop
YOUNGSTOWN -- Family Financial Education Services, a program of Family Service Agency, is sponsoring a First Time Home Buyer Workshop from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The free workshop is designed to cover basic home-buying information such as determining affordability, budgeting, credit problems, and the loan application process. It will be at the Family Service Agency, 535 Marmion Ave.
All participants will receive a certificate of attendance that will satisfy the education requirements for some mortgage programs. Call (330) 782-5664 to register.
Boy arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 14-year-old West Side boy was taken into custody at the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center after his sister accused him of fondling her.
The sister, 13, is mentally impaired, her foster mother told city police. It is unclear from police reports whether the boy and girl are foster siblings or share the same biological mother.
The girl told officers that the boy had gone in her bedroom and touched her chest, both over and under her shirt, pulling her into the room when she tried to leave. She had told her foster mother, via a written note, that the boy also had suggested sex.
The boy admitted to police that he touched the girl's breast. He faces a charge of gross sexual imposition.
Austintown schools
AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown Board of Education passed a $36 million budget for the 2002-2003 school year at Monday's school board meeting. Superintendent Rich Denamen said the board will likely dip into a $3 million carry-over fund for the previous school year to balance the budget.
Denamen said some improvements have been made to Austintown schools, such as replacing several boilers at Fitch High School and Davis Elementary. Little money, however, will be put back into the middle school built in 1916.
"We plan to continue to maintain the middle school and be sure it's environmentally sound," Denamen added.
Political group to meet
POLAND -- The Democrats of the 17th District, a local political organization, will meet at 7:30 p.m. today at the Poland Community Baseball Association hall on Sheridan Road.
Cleaning up cemetery
GIRARD -- Fall cleanup at Girard City Cemetery begins Wednesday and runs through Sept. 30. If flowers are not removed from graves by Sept. 30, employees will remove them to prepare for holiday wreaths.
Trustees to meetin Woodworth Park
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees will have their monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Woodworth Park. The change of venue is to showcase recent improvements made to the park.
Officials will also plant a tree in memory of all the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The park is on Luther Avenue off East Western Reserve Road, between Market Street and Southern Boulevard, just south of the Boardman Township line.
Teen revival
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Christian rap music, speakers and worship leaders will be on hand for a teen revival at the New Castle City Rescue Mission's Sankey Center, 125 Grant St. The event kicks off at 6:45 p.m. today and continues Wednesday and Thursday.
