Teen faces many charges after police chase

LISBON -- A 16-year-old Salem boy who authorities say led deputy sheriffs and patrol troopers on a chase over the weekend faces numerous charges, including grand theft of a motor vehicle.
Chief Deputy Pete Whitmore of the Columbiana County Sheriff's Department said the boy will appear in juvenile court also on charges of failure to comply with the order of a law enforcement officer, no operator's license, driving under suspension, reckless operation, violations each for failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to use turn signals, marked lane violations and a probation violation.
What happened
Whitmore said Guilford Lake State Park rangers reported about 10:17 p.m. Saturday that they were following a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass they identified as stolen.
He said the teenager led deputies on a chase of more than 20 miles on state Route 172 through Hanover, Butler and Knox townships, ending on Wooddale Road in Hanover Township when he failed to negotiate a curve and struck a ditch.
Whitmore said during the course of the chase, the teenager disregarded stop signs at intersections traveling at speeds in excess of 65 mph and was weaving across both lanes of the highway, forcing cars off the road.
An attempt by troopers from the Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol to stop the car using stop sticks at the intersection of state Routes 172 and 9 in Hanover Township failed, Whitmore said. He said the teenager continued to drive the car with three tires flattened by the stop sticks.
