BUTLER, Pa. -- POW/MIA Recognition Day will be observed on Friday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at 1 p.m.
Any former POW or family member of those missing in action who did not receive a formal invitation may call (724) 285-2490 for information. Also, the general public is invited to attend the program.

ADVANCED TRAINING
Army ROTC leadership
Thomas M. Hardy and Walter A. Horodyski graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) National Advanced Leadership Camp at Fort Lewis, Wash.
Hardy is a son of Tim and Jean Hardy of Poland and is a 1999 graduate of Poland Seminary High School.
Horodyski is a son of Walter and Mary E. Horodyski of Kinsman and is a 1999 graduate of Badger High School, Kinsman.
Aerial delivery officer
Army Capt. Terry R. Brady graduated from the aerial delivery materiel officer course at the Army Logistics Management College, Fort Lee, Va. Brady, a quartermaster officer, is the son of Sally and stepson of Brian Buttermore of Youngstown.
PROMOTIONS
Naval officer
Navy Chief Petty Officer Tamara R. Sinclair, a 1985 graduate of Columbiana High School, was promoted to her current rank while serving with Commander Submarine Group Eight, Naples, Italy.
HONORS
Army commendation
Army Sgt. Heath P. Heriger has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal. Heriger is a howitzer gunner assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Okla.
He is a son of Polly R. Means of Hermitage, Pa., and his wife, Candace, is a daughter of Richard W. Curtician of Greenville, Pa. The sergeant is a 1998 graduate of Reynolds Junior Senior High School, Transfer, Pa.
Air Force recognition
Air Force Tech. Sgt. Charles M. White has been decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal. This is his third award of the medal, which he earned for his exceptional work as the supervisor of medical readiness and public health at Hurlburt Field, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
White is now assistant supervisor assigned to the 51st Medical Group at Osan Air Base, South Korea.
He is a son of Suandra J. White of Youngstown. He graduated in 1979 from The Rayen School and received an associate degree in 1996 from the Community College of the Air Force. In 1998, he earned both an associate degree and a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland through the military extension program in Okinawa, Japan.
ENDURING FREEDOM
Serving at sea
Several area residents are serving in the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf. They include:
U Navy Lt. J.G. Lon Prater, whose wife, Angie, is the daughter of Keith Clark of Masury, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, based in Norfolk, Va.
U Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Brian K. Miller, son of Paulette N. Gillette of East Liverpool, assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Seven, home based in Gulfport, Miss. Miller is a 1986 graduate of Beaver Local High School in Lisbon.
