Two local youthdo well in tournament
Charlie and Daniel Bancroft of Canfield posted second and third place wins respectively in the annual Lake County Perch Fest Tournament in Fairport Harbor Sept. 7 and 8. Charlie won $75 while Daniel got $50 for their finishes in the 14 and under youth division.
The boys, sons of Chuck and Robin Bancroft, also each hooked a $50 prize for having the biggest fish for the two-day event, Charlie for a 12.82-pounder and Daniel for a 12.74-pound perch.
Charlie, 9, is a fourth-grader and Daniel, 8, a second-grader, both at Heartland Christian School in Columbiana.
The two boys have competed in 12 tournaments and walked away with five first-place finishes, six second places and one third.
Author, expert anglerset at local fly shop
Oliver Edwards will be appearing at Books and Hooks Flyfishing Shop on Sept. 23 from 1 to 7 p.m.
Edwards of Yorkshire, England, is one of Britain's best-known flytiers and has an international reputation for his realistically tied flies. He is an accomplished trout fisherman and has represented England in the World Flyfishing Championships.
Edwards is most familiar to U.S. flytiers via his book, "Oliver Edwards' Flytiers Masterclass - a Step-by-Step Guide to Tying 20 Essential Patterns." He has regular columns in Trout and Salmon, Salmon Trout & amp; Seatrout and Flyfishing & amp; Flytying magazines. In addition, he has produced several videos.
Edwards will be tying flies, signing books, fielding questions and engaging in discussion. Books and Hooks Flyfishing shop is located in the former school building at 110 Maple Ave. in Girard. Call for information, (330) 545-1906.
Lakes trial qualifier
Results of the final Lakes Trail Qualifier at Portage Lakes Sept. 7:
1st, Ron Kotch and Ron Goodwin, Wadsworth, $600; 2nd, Dave and Brooks Joseph, Akron, $440; 3rd, Bill Mickey and Tim Brewer, Salem, $380; 4th, Steve Browning and Gary Wingfield, Akron, $340; 5th, Wally Masink and Dennis Troutman from, Kent, $300.
Thirty teams advanced by points and 5 via wild-card decision to the championship at Lake Chautauqua in New York, Sept 21 and 22.

Bobcat permits drawn
The Pennsylvania Game Commission publicly drew the names of 545 individuals Friday who will be awarded one bobcat permit each for the upcoming 2002-2003 hunting and trapping season.
After a thorough review of the 3,114 applications received for the drawing, the Game Commission disqualified 123 individuals for failing to follow instructions, including mailing in multiple applications or bounced checks. Of the 2,991 eligible applicants in the drawing, an additional 50 applications were drawn as alternates in case any of the first 545 individuals are declared ineligible during an application review by the Bureau of Law Enforcement.
Those selected in the random drawing will receive in early October one permit for no additional charge to either hunt or trap one bobcat. The hunting season wi ll run from Oct. 19-Feb. 22. The trapping season will run from Oct. 20-Feb. 22.
