Volleyball teamloses in five games
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Despite a career-best tying 25 kills from junior Colleen Royer and a career-high 18 kills from sophomore Lori Lyman, the Youngstown State volleyball team fell to Winthrop in five games Friday, 30-26, 20-30, 30-25, 26-30, 13-15.
Senior Michele Batton recorded a career-high 12 blocks, including nine block assists for the Penguins (3-4). In the fifth game, the Penguins hit just .048 to let the match slip away.
Winthrop is 7-1.

YOUNGSTOWN -- IUPUI's Tara Latella scored two goals, including one in overtime, to lift the Jaguars to a 2-1 victory over the Youngstown State women's soccer team Friday.
Freshman Maura Patton gave YSU (1-3) a 1-0 lead when she scored her fourth career goal at 33:30 off an assist from junior Kara White.
Latella scored at 67:29 to knot it. IUPUI is 2-4.

Pozzuto contributesto softball title
EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- Markie Pozzuto of Cortland played for Akron's Ohio Ice 12-and-younger fast-pitch softball team that won the Super World Series Championship over Labor Day weekend.
Possuto pitched a one-hit shutout with no walks and fired a two-hit shutout with no walks in the championship game against the Vallejo (California) Hurricanes. The Maplewood eighth grader also had four hits in seven at-bats.
Brad Schutznamed to first team
CANFIELD -- Brad Schutz of Canfield, a shortstop and the top hitter for the Youngstown Express baseball team this summer, has been selected to the All-Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League First Team.
Schutz, a senior at the University of Cincinnati where he plays for the Bearcats' baseball team, led the Express with a .344 batting average, 44 hits and a .436 on-base average.
He was named a Great Lakes Player of the Week in July on the strength of a 22-game hitting streak.
At Cincinnati, Schutz made the All-Conference USA team. He is the son of Beth and Ron Schutz.

Cavs on TV
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers and Fox Sports Net announced that 40 regular season games will be aired live on Fox Sports Net during the 2002-03 NBA season, beginning with the Cavs home opener against the three-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
Fox Sports Net will air 27 home games from Gund Arena and 13 games from the road.
Other highlights on the Fox schedule are games against Toronto (Dec. 11) and New Jersey (Feb. 25 and March 23).

Senate honorsErnie Harwell
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate passed a resolution Friday that honors the 84-year-old Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell, who will retire at the end of September after 55 years of announcing major league baseball.
The resolution says Harwell "brought to life, through the medium of radio, the performances of some of baseball's greats, such as Sparky Anderson, Kirk Gibson, Al Kaline, Denny McLain, Alan Trammell, and many others."
No black hightopsfor Colts' Manning
INDIANAPOLIS -- The NFL denied a request from Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning to wear black hightop shoes for Sunday's home game against the Miami Dolphins.
Manning made the request to honor former Baltimore Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas, who died of a heart attack Wednesday in Baltimore at the age of 69.
Unitas wore trademark hightop black shoes throughout his NFL career.
