YOUNGSTOWN Catholic diocese event focuses on ministry

YOUNGSTOWN -- "Living for the Lord" is the theme for the Diocese of Youngstown's Ministry Convocation from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at Youngstown State University's Kilcawley Center.
The Rev. Dr. William Headley will deliver the morning keynote, "Making Peace in the 21st Century," and Patrick Madrid will deliver the afternoon keynote, "Search and Rescue."
Convocation 2002 will offer 38 workshops for approximately 800 people in various parish ministries in the six-county diocese. The event is sponsored by the department of pastoral and educational services and the department of Catholic charities, and supported in part by the Bishop's Appeal. The convocation celebrates the gifts and develops the skills of those who share faith with adults, youth and children.
The speakers
Father Headley is an American sociologist, counselor and university professor. He currently serves as deputy executive director of policy and strategies issues of Catholic Relief Services. As director of PSI, Headley supports the agency in creating a justice-based framework to guide relief and development programs in 90 countries the agency serves.
He will also offer a dialogue on "Practical Peace Building in a Troubled World: You and the CRS" in one of the additional sessions.
Patrick Madrid is the publisher of Envoy Magazine, an award-winning Catholic journal of apologetics and evangelization, and the author of several books on apologetics. Madrid hosts two television and radio series: "Pope Fiction" and "The Truth About Scripture and Tradition." He is also the executive producer of the radio program "Right Here, Right Now." Madrid has conducted apologetics and evangelization conferences on four continents.
Madrid's afternoon speech will challenge participants to strengthen their faith-sharing skills and bring themselves and others closer to Christ and the church.
Other sessions
Additional sessions will cover topics such as catechesis, liturgy, family life, stewardship, medical ethics, youth evangelization, parish pastoral councils, Web design and more.
Registration is $25 before Sept. 27 and $30 after. Group discounts are available. Walk-ins are welcome. Participants are eligible for five hours of religious education certification credit.
