HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Rayen overcomes Struthers; Canfield, Howland unbeaten



Keith Ratliff's late touchdown lifted the Tigers to the victory.
STRUTHERS -- Keith Ratliff scored on a 10-yard run with just 90 seconds left to play Friday as the Rayen School football team came from behind to beat Struthers, 38-34.
The teams traded touchdowns in the first half, which saw the Tigers (2-2) in front 16-14 after one quarter but trailing 26-22 at the break.
Ty Paige scored on runs of 7 yards and 1 yard, then found Ratliff for an 18-yard scoring aerial, which pushed Rayen to a 22-14 cushion.
Tim Zetts threw touchdown passes of 28 and 5 yards to Dave Allen, sandwiched around intermission to give the Wildcats (1-3) a 34-22 lead with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter.
With just 3:24 remaining in the game, Chris Holland fired a 65-yard touchdown pass to Eric Brown as the Tigers climbed within four points (34-30), and set up the late heroics by Ratliff capped by Holland's conversion run.
Canfield 34, Wilson 16
CANFIELD -- Unbeaten Canfield (4-0) played its varsity only the first half in building a commanding 34-2 lead.
Tim Dewberry rushed for 52 yards on five carries, which included TD runs of 22, 11 and 10 yards. Tom Rogers gained 24 yards on five tries, including TD runs of 18 and 6 yards.
Fullback Bill DeCola gained 41 yards on four attempts, while quarterback Leo Sorice hit on 5-of-6 passes for 115 yards.
Cardinals linebacker Chad Carrera had two sacks for minus 12 yards and defensive end Dave Olsavsky had a sack for minus 2 yards.
Gary Scott of Wilson (0-4) gained 36 yards on five carries, including a 12-yard TD run. The Redmen's backup quarterback, Carlton Sims, was 3-of-9 for 101 yards passing.
Howland 23, Brooke, W.Va. 0
HOWLAND -- The Tigers (4-0) controlled the ground game in shutting down their opponent from West Virginia.
Maurice Smith scored on runs of 1 yard and 6 yards as Howland totaled 341 rushing yards and 389 for the game. The Tigers' defense limited Brooke to -32 yards rushing and 190 total.
Salem 26, Indian Creek 15
SALEM -- Grant Sevek and Lance Buckley each rushed for more than 100 yards, and Salem used a 21-0 third quarter lead to beat visiting Indian Creek.
Sevek had 28 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 29 yards and a touchdown for the Quakers (2-2). Lance Buckley rushed 12 times for 123 yards and a touchdown.
Landon Heath completed 10 of 15 passes for 102 yards and a 30-yard touchdown to Sevek with just 32 seconds left in the first half. Zac Grey caught three passes for 36 yards.
Aaron Bane led Indian Creek (1-3) with 13 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown.
Steubenville 34, Niles 0
NILES -- Steubenville Big Red, led by two touchdowns each from Nate Hubbard (85 and 5 yards) and Sean Liggett (3 yards and 1 yard), streaked to a 34-14 lead to overpower Niles (0-4).
Steubenville jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Brian Pruitt's 6-yard TD pass to Eric Dawson, and Chris Ferroni's extra-point kick, the first of four placements.
Hubbard rushed for 181 yards in eight carries.
For Niles, Joe Skocik scored on a 15-yard run, while Jared Sears went 29 yards to the other tally. Brandon Rappach kicked both extra points.
West Branch 27, Carrollton 10
CARROLLTON -- Nate Greenawalt hit on eight of 12 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors (3-1, 2-0 Northeastern Buckeye Conference).
Josh Venables caught three passes for 78 yards, including a 7-yard ball for a 6-0 lead. After Carrollton (2-2, 0-1) pulled within 13-10 in the fourth quarter, Josh Davis caught a 27-yard TD pass from Greenawalt then ran 5 yards for a score.
