First spirituality day planned for Sept. 27
YOUNGSTOWN -- The first St. Vincent de Paul Day of Spirituality will be Sept. 27, the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul. Mass will be at 12:10 p.m. in St. Columba Cathedral. Bishop Benedict C. Franzetta, retired auxiliary bishop of Youngstown, will preside and give the homily.
After Mass, a luncheon will be served and a workshop and presentation on the spirituality of St. Vincent de Paul will be from 12:45 to 3 p.m.
Guest speakers will be the Rev. Timothy O'Neill, pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Hubbard, and the Rev. Bernard Schmalzried, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Warren. Both are involved with the St. Vincent de Paul societies in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Representatives from each of the approximately 40 St. Vincent de Paul conferences in the six-county Diocese of Youngstown will attend.
Bishop Thomas J. Tobin will bless the new food pantry service site at 11 a.m. Oct. 2 in the former Sts. Cyril and Methodius garage at 252 E. Wood St.
Alpha Class offered

Blue Army events

In Sharpsville, Pa., The World Apostolate of Fatima, Mercer County Division, which is also known as the Blue Army, is sponsoring an international Catholic speaker, Thomas Rutkoski, at a holy hour at 3 p.m. Oct. 6, in Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell, Pa. After the presentation, there will be a healing service.
Rutkoski was chief photojournalist at KDKA-TV. He was away from the church for 27 years. He says that after he was healed miraculously of rheumatoid arthritis, he resigned his lucrative position and now travels the world as a Catholic evangelist.
Annual banquet is setfor mid-October
WARREN -- The Camillus annual banquet will be Oct. 13 at DiLucia's Banquet Hall in Warren to honor all pastoral caregivers from Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital.
Pastoral caregivers nominated by their pastors for 10 or more continuous years of ministry to the sick in hospitals, nursing homes or the homebound, will be presented with the Monsignor John Lettau Award. Three priests appointed by Bishop Tobin
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bishop Thomas J. Tobin has made the following appointments in the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown: The Rev. James Johnson, associate pastor of St. Mary Parish in Massillon, effective Aug. 8; the Rev. Joseph R. Valentine, pastor of Queen Holy Rosary Parish in Vienna, effective Aug. 1; and the Rev. Jules Wong, parochial vicar at Mount Alverna Friary in Youngstown, effective June 24.
Father Johnson, was ordained May 27, 1960, in New Mexico for the Servants of the Paraclete. He previously served as associate pastor at Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Michael Parish and St. Joan of Arc Parish, all in Canton; St. Mary Parish in Massillon; and St. Patrick Parish in Hubbard. He also served as chaplain at Timken Mercy Hospital in Canton and St. Thomas Hospital in Akron. He was superior of the Paraclete Fathers community in Canton for 10 years.
Father Valentine, a member of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter and a native of North Carolina, was ordained June 5, 1993, for the Diocese of Charlotte, N.C. He previously served as parochial vicar at St. Leo the Great Parish in Winston-Salem, N.C.; Queen of Apostles Parish, Belmont, N.C.; and St. Francis deSales Latin Mass Community in Atlanta. He was administrator at Holy Infant Parish in Reidsville, N.C. He served as chaplain for the Mater Dei Latin Mass Community in Dallas.
Father Wong, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, was ordained June 29, 1973, for the Franciscan Province of the Immaculate Conception. He served as an assistant pastor and pastor at parishes in Jamaica and Toronto.
Alan Hutchinson named Park Vista chaplain
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rev. Alan Hutchison of Poland has been named director of pastoral care/chaplain for Park Vista. The Rev. Mr. Hutchison formerly served as community service provider for the Child and Adolescent Alternative Program of the Heartland Behavioral Health Center's Trumbull County site, and as director of pastoral care/chaplain at the former Woodside Hospital from 1986 to 1995. He has served as parish associate for the Poland Presbyterian Church since 1996 and will continue in that position.
Mr. Hutchison is a graduate of Ohio State University where he received a bachelor's degree in social work in 1969. He attended Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, receiving a master's degree in divinity in 1974, and Duquesne University, where he graduated with a master's degree in education in 1976. He was ordained in 1977 in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
He assumed the full-time position in August. He will have primary responsibility to provide spiritual care to approximately 300 residents. He will also oversee the Stephen Ministry program, work with the resident ecumenical religious life committee, and conduct a program encouraging residents to be proactive in their physical, mental and spiritual well-being. He will also serve as Park Vista's representative and liaison to the faith community.
Flame Fellowship
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown chapter of Flame Fellowship will meet at 11 a.m. Monday in Boardman Park at the Georgeanna Parker Activity Center for a buffet lunch followed by guest speaker, Mark Kholos, a Messianic Jew from Salem. Red Mass to be Sept. 22 at St. Columba Cathedral
YOUNGSTOWN -- The sixth annual Red Mass, a traditional celebration for those who serve in the judicial and legal professions, will be at noon Sept. 22 in St. Columba Cathedral. Bishop Thomas J. Tobin will be the main celebrant. The Rev. Donald Miller, director of campus ministry at Walsh University in Canton, will be the homilist.
The Red Mass is intended to bring together members of the bench and bar in prayerful community for guidance, strength and recommitment to the highest principles of the legal profession for the benefit of the community.
After the Mass, a luncheon will be at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Hall in Youngstown. The luncheon speaker will be Dr. David F. Forte, a Cleveland State University law professor and Consultor to the Pontifical Council for the Family.
Atty. Charles Tyburski of Stark County will be awarded the Lex Christi Award, which is given periodically by Bishop Tobin to a member of the legal profession. Tyburski is a Fellow of the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
The Red Mass Committee, in cooperation with the Mahoning County Bar Association, will present a continuing education luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 23 in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Hall. Brian Corbin, executive director of Catholic Charities Services, will speak on "Advocacy for Justice and Building the Common Good -- the Role of Legal Ethics and Code of Professional Responsibility."
