Death penalty added to murder charge

The defendant is being held in jail without bond.
WARREN -- A 20-year-old Newton Falls man would face the death penalty if convicted in the fatal shooting of Harvey Hill earlier this month.
A Trumbull County grand jury indicted Chad Karpenko on an aggravated murder charge with death-penalty specifications. The specification is that the murder took place at the same time as another crime. Karpenko also is charged with aggravated burglary.
Karpenko is expected to be arraigned on the murder charge next week, court officials said.
Karpenko, who is being in the county jail without bond, was paroled from prison March 11 after serving about three years for a burglary conviction.
About the victim
Police say Karpenko fatally shot Hill, 66, of 596 Hillsdale N.E., on Sept. 3. Hill was pronounced dead at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital from a single gunshot wound.
Karpenko was brought in by police the day after the shooting because fingerprints left on a window frame with a cut screen were matched by computer with his.
Police said Karpenko told them he visited the house the week before to look at firearms.
However, an affidavit filed with the court by the county prosecutor's office says that shortly after midnight Sept. 3, a man dressed in black and carrying a handgun stumbled into two parked police cars moments after the officers heard a single shot.
The man changed direction and ran into a wooded area. Police lost him, but they found on the ground a Colt .25 semiautomatic pistol with an attached flashlight.
A second firearm, a Colt .32 revolver that had belonged to the victim, was found in the same general area later Sept. 3 police said.
As officers chased the gunman, a 911 call came in from Hill's house, police said. The caller did not speak.
Two other Warren police officers knocked down the door of the house about 12:30 a.m. Sept. 3 after looking through a window and seeing Hill bleeding on the floor.
