COLUMBIANA COUNTY Good defense keys Lisbon win over United Local



Leetonia rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Columbiana, 21-17.
LISBON -- Frank Gallo scored two touchdowns Friday as the Lisbon High football team won its Tri-County League opener, 28-14, over United.
Gallo scored from 1 and 5 yards out.
Jeremaine Lewis scored on a 3-yard run for Lisbon (3-1, 1-0). Quarterback Jay Yorty, who completed 8 of 16 passes for 102 yards, had a 12-yard touchdown run.
Kevin West led Lisbon in rushing with 65 yards on 15 carries.
Lisbon's defense limited the Golden Eagles (3-1, 0-1) to 25 yards rushing.
United's Corey Manfull caught touchdown passes of 6 and 34 yards from Mitch Phillis, who completed 11 of 25 throws for 135 yards.
Leetonia 21, Columbiana 17
LEETONIA -- Behind 17-16, Leetonia (3-1, 1-0 TCL) got a 28-yard field goal from Phil Cibula and Freddie Gray tackled Columbiana's (3-1, 0-1) quarterback for a safety in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore fullback Aaron Merrio, who rushed for 114 yards on 21 carries, plunged a yard to give the Bears at 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Cibula made the placement for an extra points and minutes later kicked a 31-yard field goal.
After Erick Birnesser kicked a 44-yard field goal and Chris Harman scored on a 5-yard run for the Clippers, Brandon Simms of Leetonia recovered a fumble in the Clippers' endzone for a TD.
John Tollas scored on a 43-yard run in the third period and Birnesser's extra point kick put the Clippers out in front 17-16.
Matt Custer, Leetonia's quarterback gained 71 yards on 11 carries and he also hit on 9-of-20 passes for 110 yards.
Tollas gained 67 yards on eight attempts for the Clippers.
Adam Fast, quarterback was 0-of-7 for zero yards and he was intercepted twice.
East Palestine 35, Crestview 3
EAST FAIRFIELD -- Quarterback Smitty Kendrew ran 28 yards and 13 yards for touchdowns, Mitch Cyrus scored twice on short runs and J.D. Powers made another short-yardage tally to lead East Palestine (3-1, 1-0).
Palestine had 449 total yards with 279 coming on the ground and 170 in the air by Kendrew on 11 of 18.
Kendrew, a senior, finished with 16 carries for 112 yards while Powers added 73 yards on 15 tries.
Chris Clark had six catches for 112 yards.
Crestview (0-4, 0-1) managed 157 yards with 72 from rushing and 85 from passing.
Rebel quarterback Troy Duwe completed 10 of 24 passes for his team's aerial yardage.
After a scoreless first quarter, Crestview got on the board first when Josh Rashilla made a 38-yard field goal with 8:18 left before halftime.
Beaver Local 10, East Liverpool 0
LISBON -- Unbeaten Beaver High's (4-0) tenacious defense limited East Liverpool (1-3) to 38 rushing and 30 passing yards.
Jake Robinson returned a fumble 5 yards to give Beaver Local a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Dave Kinsey made a place kick for the extra point.
Kinsey's 22-yard field goal gave the Beavers a 10-0 lead at intermission.
The Potters never seriously threatened, while the Beavers were inside East Liverpool's 20-yard line on three other occasions.
Jordan Williams led the Beavers with 101 yards on 17 carries.
Beaver Local, which failed to complete a pass in two attempts, gained 168 yards rushing on 47 tries.
Beavers linebacker Dustin Bach and defensive end Jared Williams each had eight tackles and a sack.
