Probing man's death
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police detectives and the Mahoning County coroner are investigating the death of a man found hanging from a fence at a Martin Luther King Boulevard business.
Police said John C. Holby, 43, no address, was found with an extension cord wrapped around his neck and strapped to a fence outside USA Metals around 7:40 a.m. Thursday. His hands were strapped and tied to his sides with a leather belt; a knife and more extension cord were found in a plastic bag nearby. A crowd had congregated in the business parking lot by the time police arrived.
Volunteers at the neighboring Rescue Mission shelter said Holby had stayed there a few days ago and had eaten breakfast there Thursday morning.
Trash hauler's plea
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Struthers trash hauler pleaded innocent today in Youngstown Municipal Court to a charge of depositing debris after being cited for dumping garbage in Youngstown. He also pleaded innocent Thursday to littering and a trash-hauling license violation.
Anthony P. Arnoto, 51, of Fifth Street, told a Mahoning County deputy sheriff he was on disability, but sheriff's department reports show he charged a Poland man $110 to remove trash from his basement earlier this month.
The Poland man told the officer he had contacted T-N-T Hauling to remove the trash, which was found Tuesday by the deputy at Jackson Street near railroad tracks. The deputy had found a box with the Poland man's name and address, his gas grill and other items. The man told the officer that he was told the items would be taken to a Springfield landfill.
A pretrial was set for Nov. 5.
Workers find dead dog
CAMPBELL -- Police canvassed neighbors in the first block of Sixth Street hoping to find someone who knew something about a dog found shot to death in the area.
Ed Sharshan, assistant administrator to the chief of police, said street department workers discovered the dog about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday behind a house on Sixth Street.
The dog is a black female, possibly a pit bull, weighs about 60 pounds and is wearing a collar but no tags. It was shot once in the abdomen.
Library board decisions
POLAND -- The board of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County conferred trustee emeritus status on its president, Kenneth J. Wilson, and elected Dr. David Ritchie as board president and Kathryn Bennett as vice president at the board meeting here Thursday.
Wilson, who is moving from Boardman to River Landing, N.C., to be closer to relatives, has been a library trustee for 21 years and board president for six years.
The board also received letters of resignation from Daniel H. Becker, vice president and longtime trustee, and Thomas C. Atwood, who had been a trustee for about five years.
