CANFIELD -- Three rotting SBC Ameritech telephone poles were pulled to the ground when the trailer of a tractor-trailer caught the low-hanging wires on Garda Lane near Messerly Road.
A Mahoning County deputy sheriff said the telephone cable was pulled to the ground and severed when the 56-year-old North Carolina driver hit it around noon Thursday. He was not cited.
Man, woman assaulted
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 20-year-old man suffered a bump to his head after being hit by a brick at a West Side home, city police reports show. A woman who lives at the South Whitney Avenue home told officers her 23-year-old estranged husband, of Austintown, kicked in her door, hitting her with it, and threw her into a wall around 3:20 p.m. Thursday. He hit the 20-year-old man with a brick. The woman, whose age was not reported, had a cut over her left eyebrow.
Stabbed with fork
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 49-year-old man with two puncture wounds to his chest told city police he had been stabbed on the North Side with a two-pronged fork by his girlfriend. Police said the man had been stabbed at a Stansbury Drive apartment around 1:40 a.m. today, by woman in her 40s. The man, of West Delason Avenue, refused treatment at St. Elizabeth Health Center and said he would not file charges.
Drug trials scheduled
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Austintown men are set to go to trial in November on drug trafficking charges. Steven Devellin, 19, of Dunbar Avenue has pleaded innocent to five counts of trafficking in marijuana, two counts of trafficking in OxyContin, and one count of trafficking in Vicodin. His trial is set for Nov. 6 before Judge Robert Lisotto in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
Brian Schiavo, 20, of Ruby Court has pleaded innocent to eight counts of trafficking in marijuana. He is set to go to trial Nov. 20 before Judge Jack Durkin court in common pleas court.
Both Schiavo and Devellin were secretly indicted by a county grand jury, arrested by Austintown police, and arraigned Sept. 4. The arrests stemmed from a three-month joint investigation by Austintown police and a Youngstown State University police officer assigned to the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force. Details about the investigation were not immediately available.
Leonard Kirtz closed
AUSTINTOWN -- Leonard Kirtz School on Woodrige Avenue was closed today because of a water main break. The school is expected to be open Monday.
