EAST PALESTINE -- The East Palestine high school marching band is hosting its annual band show at 7 p.m. Monday at Reid Stadium.
Also featured will be marching bands from Crestview, Salem and Sebring.
Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for students. Senior citizens will get in free.
Firehouse's open house
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate 75 years of service to the community with an open house and chicken dinner from 4-7 p.m. Saturday at the fire station, 601 W. South Range Road. Residents can tour the station and view the equipment. Dinners are $8 for adults and $5 for children under 12, but only a limited amount of dinners will be available since most of the tickets have been sold.
Dead bird had virus
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Health officials have determined that another dead bird found in Lawrence County had the West Nile virus. The blue jay found in Shenango Township is the eighth bird found with the virus in the county. Two mosquito pools and one horse have also tested positive for the disease in the county.
Equipment for sale
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Surplus equipment owned by Lawrence County that is going up for sale will be available for viewing from 8-11 a.m. Saturday behind Hill View Manor on Pa. Route 65. The sale includes vehicles, desks, chairs and other office equipment. Bid forms will be available Saturday. Bids will be accepted until 3:30 p.m. Monday and opened at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Anything not sold will be destroyed, county officials said.
Bridge work approved
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners approved doing maintenance work on the Covert's Crossing Bridge. The one-lane, wood deck bridge in Union and Mahoning townships needs 100 wood planks, according to county engineers. They estimate it will cost about $2,000.
Meeting canceled
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The regular meeting of the Lawrence County commissioners scheduled for Tuesday has been canceled because commissioners will be in Pittsburgh for a meeting with the Army Corps of Engineers about river development. The next commissioners meeting will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 24 in the county government center.
Dedication of pavilion
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Township trustees said the dedication of the Tim Novosel Memorial Pavilion is set for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 29 at the Old Springfield United Church of Christ on state Route 170. The pavilion is available for use by township youth groups.
The next crime watch meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the township building, trustees said.
