Kennedy hirestennis coach
WARREN -- Jose Nogales has been hired to coach the Warren Kennedy High girls tennis team. In addition to coaching, Nogales, an alumnus of Youngstown State, will teach Spanish.
Matt Finnertyrunner of the week
CLEVELAND -- Matt Finnerty, a junior member of the Case Western Reserve University cross country team from Cardinal Mooney High and Poland, has been selected as the University Athletic Association Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Finnerty was honored after successfully defending his individual title at the Case Western Reserve University/Bill Sudeck Invitational with a 26.13 clocking over the 8,000-meter distance.
Behind Finnerty, the Spartans successfully defended their team championship with 35 points in a field of 14 teams.
Ekis cited by Titans
NEW WILMINGTON -- Brian Ekis, a junior wide receiver for the Westminster College football team from Boardman High, was named Offensive Titan of the Week for his performance in his first collegiate start last Saturday.
Ekis caught three passes for 68 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown toss in the first quarter, in Westminster's 28-26 season-opening loss to Walsh University.
Also honored as & quot;Titans of the Week & quot; were sophomore safety Clint DeLuca (Beaver Falls/Blackhawk High) as Defensive Titan of the Week, and sophomore kicker Josh Simpson (Houston/Chartiers-Houston High) as Special Teams Titan of the Week.
Kyle Vuchaknamed by PAC
NEW WILMINGTON -- Kyle Vuchak, a senior defensive end for the Grove City College football team from Howland High, has been selected as Presidents' Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Vuchak was cited for his play in Grove City's 30-7 romp past Hiram, coming up with a team-high five tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
He spearheaded a defense that prevented the Hiram offense from scoring any points, and restricted the Terriers only 64 total yards.
Corrections
The Lakeview High girls soccer team won the 2001 Trumbull Athletic Conference soccer title. An article in Sunday's paper mistakenly credited Hubbard with the league championship.
Mike Mogg Jr. was the goalie for Hubbard's boys soccer team in a 4-2 loss to Lakeview on Monday. Tuesday's paper listed sophomore Aaron Severa as the goalie. Mogg, a senior, had nine saves for the Eagles.

ST. LOUIS -- Eric Crouch, the Heisman Trophy winner last year for Nebraska who tried to make the switch from quarterback to receiver with the St. Louis Rams, has decided to retire.
Clavelle suspended
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Shot putter Marcus Clavelle, who finished third at the U.S. Open track meet, was suspended for two years after testing positive for steroids.
War Emblem sold
NEW YORK -- Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner War Emblem was sold for $17 million, and plans called for the 3-year-old colt to run in the Breeders' Cup Classic before retiring to stud in Japan.
