Conjoined twins who couldn't be separated die at their home

BRISTOLVILLE -- The conjoined twin daughters born last month to a Bristolville couple have died.
A spokeswoman for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh said the twins died Tuesday evening at home. The girls were born Aug. 16 at Magee-Womens Hospital, daughters of Misty and Keith Berry.
They weighed just more than 11 pounds at birth and were joined at the chest and abdomen. They shared a heart and liver.
Doctors performed a heart catheterization Aug. 19 to try to understand the anatomy of the shared heart. Doctors determined their shared heart would make a separation impossible.
They were discharged to a hospice Aug. 24. No further information was available. A woman who answered the phone at the couple's residence declined to comment.
Conjoined twins occur when a fertilized egg that would have become identical twins fails to split apart. This occurs once in every 50,000 to 60,000 births. In three out of four cases, the twins are stillborn or die within 24 hours.
