LAWRENCE COUNTY Commissioners OK paving contract

The county clock tower will be in place sometime in early October.

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Paving will begin this fall at the Lawrence County Government Center.
County commissioners approved a $94,410 contract with Butch & amp; McCree Paving for paving three parking lots at the government center.
Charleen Micco, chief clerk, said work will be done from 4 p.m. to dusk Monday through Thursday and all day Fridays and Saturdays.
When work begins will depend on weather, but they should start sometime before the cold season, Micco said.
Work will include paving the gravel lot above the county jail and a sidewalk, the lot near the county warehouse and the lot directly in front of the courthouse.
The work is being paid for by a $5 million bond issue commissioners took out two years ago to help pay for countywide reassessment.
Possible delay
In other business, commissioners said the installation of a clock tower on the courthouse could be delayed by one to two weeks.
There has been a delay in delivery for the mechanism that operates the clock, said Commissioner Ed Fosnaught.
They expect to have it up and running by the first or second week of October, he said.
The courthouse has been without a clock tower since the 1950s when commissioners agreed to remove it because it was crumbling and too costly to fix at that time.
The new clock tower will cost about $150,000 and is also being paid for with funds from the county bond issue.
