Kristy Gaudiosemakes commitment
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kristy Gaudiose, a senior at Poland High School, has verbally committed to play basketball at Youngstown State, beginning with the 2003-04 season.
Gaudiose has achieved All-Ohio honors, All-Northeast Ohio (twice) and All-Metro Athletic Conference (twice). She holds the Poland single-game scoring mark (36) and twice set the record for free throws, making 14-of-15 attempts. She made 50 3-point goals last season and will be earning her fourth varsity letter. She also is a two-year letterwinner in softball where she earned All-MAC honors both years.
Gaudiose is a member of the National Honor Society and carries a 3.68 GPA. She is ranked 33rd in her class and is in the honors program.
She is the daughter of Marty and Patti Gaudios of Poland.

Delbert Fergusonnamed by SVC
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline High's Delbert Ferguson was named Steel Valley Conference player of the week.
In the Irish's 45-0 victory over Wilmington last Friday, Ferguson, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior, rushed 11 times for 215 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 33 yards.
Deramo top player
Regina Deramo of Brookfield was named Trumbull Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week.
Brookfield went 1-1 with a three-game win over Champion. Deramo served the last 10 points in the deciding game for the victory.
For the week she was 23-of-23 in serving, scoring 16 points with four aces. She added two kills, 24 digs, 13 assists and two saves.
SimonettiPAC's best
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College sophomore Laura Simonetti was named Presidents' Athletic Conference women's soccer player of the week.
Simonetti, of Erie, scored two goals in the last six minutes of Thiel's 3-2 win over Pitt-Greensburg. She was named first team all-conference as a freshman, leading Thiel in points, goals and assists.

Pitcher remainshospitalized
LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Dodgers rookie left-hander Kazuhisa Ishii, hit in the forehead by a line drive, had a two-hour operation to remove bone chips from his nasal passage.
He will remain hospitalized for at least a few days, Dodgers head trainer Stan Johnston said.
The Dodgers promoted Chin-Feng Chen to the major league roster, making the 24-year-old first baseman-outfielder the first Taiwanese player on a major league roster.
PGA gives Sneadone more win
NEW YORK -- Sam Snead's record of 81 official PGA Tour victories increased by one when the tour finally decided to count British Opens won before 1995.
The change also means Greg Norman, a two-time British Open champion, can choose to play the PGA Tour as long he likes.
Snead, who won at St. Andrews in 1946, now is credited with 82 career victories, nine more than Jack Nicklaus, who victory total increases to 73 with his three Open titles.
