Route 18 paving
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Crews working on the expansion of state Route 18 from two to five lanes will be doing some nighttime paving over the next two weeks.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today that the entire length of the project, from U.S. Route 62 on the south to the Corral Restaurant on the north, will be paved during night operations that will run from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m.
The paving began Monday night.
Paving in front of businesses and residences may cause minor delays until the pavement cools enough to allow traffic to use it. Those delays could be as long as 20 minutes, PennDOT said.
Traffic will be maintained during the work, but motorists should be alert for traffic pattern changes and flaggers.
Detore case request
CLEVELAND -- U.S. District Judge Ann Aldrich has denied a request by the government to transfer the case against Richard E. Detore to U.S. District Judge Solomon Oliver Jr.
Detore, a Virginia engineer, is accused of conspiring with others to bribe imprisoned ex-congressman James A. Traficant Jr. The government wanted Judge Oliver to preside because he has a related case that involves J.J. Cafaro of Liberty, who pleaded guilty to rewarding Traficant with cash, gifts and boat repairs in return for official favors.
Judge Aldrich did agree with an oral defense motion by Youngstown attorney Don L. Hanni Jr. to reset Detore's Nov. 12 jury trial. It will now begin Jan. 21.
Meeting canceled
WARREN -- City council members voted to cancel the regular meeting set for Wednesday in observance of the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The caucus is tentatively reset to 6:45 p.m. Thursday with the regular meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Councilman John Homlitas, D-3rd, made the motion at a finance committee meeting Monday. All those attending agreed. Homlitas referred to all of the services planned around the community Wednesday evening.
"I think our presence would be better served out in the community," said Councilman Robert A. Marchese, D-at large.
Board to meet
RAVENNA -- The Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant Restoration Advisory Board will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 18 at Shearer Community Center, at the intersection of Newton Falls Road and state Route 225.
Engineers will discuss a proposal to burn buildings which have been contaminated by explosives.
Hazardous waste
WARREN -- Geauga and Trumbull county residents may dispose of old paint, automotive fluids, pesticides and other household hazardous waste at a one-day collection at Packard Music Hall, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Trash, industrial and medical waste, tires, appliances, explosives, smoke detectors or asbestos will not be accepted, officials say.
The collection is sponsored by the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District.
Businesses and crime
HUBBARD -- The Hubbard Area Chamber of Commerce will host a luncheon meeting to discuss what businesses can do to protect themselves from crime. The group will meet from noon to 1 p.m. Sept. 18 at The Globe Restaurant in the Truck World Mall complex.
City police Detective Robert J. Altier and township police Detective Michael Begeot will speak to area business owners on what they can do to protect themselves from crimes such as burglary, robbery, vandalism, shoplifting, employee theft, and fraud.
Burglar alarm goes off
YOUNGSTOWN -- The burglar alarm went off at Youngstown Grinding Service at 1010 Mahoning Ave. at 1:54 a.m. today and police found that a window on the west side of the building had been broken. No one was found inside.
The business was expected to do an inventory today to see if anything was taken.
