REMEMBERING 9/11 Events scheduled

More public events to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
COLUMBIANA COUNTY
Lisbon: 8:35 a.m. Wednesday, a service will be on the first floor of the Columbiana County Courthouse on Market Street.
Salem: A remembrance ceremony set for 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Buckeye Elementary School, 1200 Buckeye Ave.
* A $5 admission is the charge for an event set for 8 p.m. Saturday in Salem High School auditorium, located off Union Avenue. Music will be provided by Salem High School Jazz Band and the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Bell Choir. Coffee and dessert will be served in the high school cafeteria.
Madison Township: At 11 a.m. Wednesday, a memorial service is to take place at West Point Elementary School, 13360 West Point Road.
MAHONING COUNTY
North Jackson: The Antonine Sisters Adult Day Care will have several events Wednesday to honor the victims and heroes of the Sept. 11 attacks. The events are a prayer service at 10:30 a.m., the planting of a tree at 11 a.m., a parade at 11:15 a.m., and a luncheon at noon. Police chiefs from Jackson and Milton townships and Lordstown and the fire chief from Jackson Township are slated to attend, as well as a Marine color guard and the Jackson-Milton choir. Struthers: VFW Post 7538 Ladies Auxiliary will present Struthers Fire Department with a recognition certificate and special remembrance poppies during a public ceremony at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the station, 96 Elm St. The remembrance poppies are made by veterans and given as thank-you gifts to supporters.
TRUMBULL COUNTY
Niles: Our Lady of Mount Carmel will have a prayer service in remembrance of the victims of terrorist attacks. The service begins at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the school gym. After the service, principal Howard Mancini, students, faculty and parents will move to the front of the school grounds for a tree-planting ceremony. The tree will be blessed by the Rev. John S. Trimbur, and participants will read poems and sing the national anthem and other songs. The ceremony will close with each class pouring a cup of water around the tree. Last year, students had a bake sale to raise money for the families of Sept. 11. This year, students were asked to perform a task at home to earn $1 toward the purchase of the tree, which was supplied by Vienna Tree Farm.
MERCER COUNTY
Sharon, Pa.: The city and Sharon American Legion Post 299 will have memorial ceremonies Wednesday. The city ceremony is set for 10 a.m. in the municipal council chambers of the city building. The Legion service is set for 5 p.m. at the legion at 1395 E. State St. A flag retirement follows that ceremony. Flags may be dropped off at the legion for proper disposal before the ceremony.
LAWRENCE COUNTY
New Wilmington, Pa.: Westminster College plans to commemorate the tragedy Wednesday with a special chapel service, red, white and blue ribbons, and patriotic music on Titan radio.
Titan radio, 88.9 FM, plans a tribute song at the top of every hour beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until midnight. At 8:46 a.m. President R. Thomas Williamson will present live remarks. After the address, the station will present the bagpipe version of "Amazing Grace" and Whitney Houston's version of the national anthem.
Lambda Sigma, Westminster's leadership honor society, will distribute red, white, and blue ribbons to those who attend a special chapel service scheduled at 11:45 a.m.
The service will include prayers, Scripture, a brief meditation and special music by the Chamber Choir. The radio station plans a live broadcast of the chapel service.
