City-plan workshops
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city is conducting a half-dozen invitation-only workshops starting today as part of its comprehensive plan, a process the city is calling Youngstown 2010.
The last citywide plan was done in the 1950s and was last updated in the 1970s. The city is working with Youngstown State University in writing the plan.
Various community leaders have been invited to one of a half-dozen sessions through Thursday to talk about the city's strengths, weaknesses and opportunities.
The results will be brought to public forums later this year.
The plan will be written next year after leadership and public comments are gathered.
Shot in stomach
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eric Brady, 16, of East Avondale Avenue, was in stable condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center, recovering from two gunshot wounds to his stomach.
Police found Brady on Saturday night, sitting on a chair on the sidewalk on East Florida Avenue.
Brady told police that shots were fired at 10:50 p.m. by a man who pulled up in a brown SUV.
Benefit for 5-year-old
AUSTINTOWN -- A benefit car cruise is being held Sept. 29 to raise money for the care of 5-year-old Joshua Walker.
The event will take place at Emmanuel Ministries on 6512 Kirk Road in Austintown from 2 to 8 p.m.
Joshua, an Austintown resident, suffers from metachromatic leukodystrophy, a rare genetic disease that prevents him from walking, talking, chewing or swallowing.
The event is open to all -- with or without cars -- and will feature door prizes, music, entertainment, raffles, hay rides and food.

Going to Somerset
WARREN -- Workers and volunteers from the Trumbull Chapter of the American Red Cross will drive the agency's emergency response vehicle to the Wednesday memorial service in Somerset, Pa., to honor people who died last year on Flight 93, which crashed near Somerset.
Baron Vance, Red Cross mass care worker, and Christinia Paul, emergency services specialist, will drive the van.
Halfway there
NILES -- The Trumbull County division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish Catholic heritage organization, will sponsor a Half-Way to St. Patrick's Day celebration Sept. 20 at McMenamy's on Youngstown-Warren Road. That Irish Band and Burke School of Dance will provide entertainment.
Admission is $15, which includes hors d'oeuvres. Tickets are available at the door.
Proceeds go to support the AOH's 2003 scholarship program.
