Commemorating 9/11
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Historical Society will commemorate the events of Sept. 11, 2001, during a special celebration at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Helen Black Miller Memorial Chapel.
The program is in connection with "Museums Celebrate America's Freedoms: A Day of Remembrance," a cooperative effort of the American Association of Museums and Home Box Office. It will celebrate American freedoms, those who support those freedoms and the American way of life.
Presentations will address patriots and heroes associated with Mercer County, insights and prayer.
The event is free and open to the public.
Civil War group to meet
MERCER -- Members of the Mercer County Historical Society's Civil War Roundtable will discuss topics for the year during its first meeting this season. The meeting is 7 p.m. Tuesday at the historical society headquarters, 119 S. Pitt St.

Food drive at FarmAid
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- When Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp take to the stage for this year's Farm Aid concert Sept. 21 at the Post-Gazette Pavilion, Slippery Rock University students will be outside loading nonperishable food items for delivery to area soup kitchens.
Farm Aid and USA Harvest asked 20 students to organize a food drive and pack items onto trucks for distribution by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Students will coordinate a food drive on the campus of SRU and deliver items to the Post-Gazette Pavilion on the morning of the concert.
