NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Enroll now for a new round of art appreciation workshops, lectures and arts classes at Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, 124 E. Leasure Ave.
The art appreciation series, for teachers and arts lovers alike, will begin Sept. 18 with a principles of dance workshop by Thom Cobb of Slippery Rock University's dance faculty. Other sessions will be about World War II-era art with Dr. Louis Zona of Butler Institute of American Art; "Art, Music and Learning Styles" by Slippery Rock University choir director Paul Laprade; "Clay in the Classroom" with ceramics instructor Donna Hetrick; painting to music with Nancy DeSalvo of Westminster College; and art and education by Dr. Richard Hamwi of Mercyhurst College. Sessions are $15 each.
New arts classes include "Introduction to Traditional Animation" for teens by Melissa Aldan; slip casting and mold making for adults by Beth Magyan; and various painting classes for senior citizens.

Dinner and concert
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Opera Guild will offer "An Italian Evening" Sept. 21 in the Kilcawley Center Chestnut Room at Youngstown State University, beginning with a wine reception at 6 p.m. and a full-course Italian dinner.
A concert at 8 p.m. will feature guest artist and YSU graduate Elsa Higby, mezzo-soprano, of New York. Advanced students of YSU Dana School of Music will perform.

Actor Quinn to visit
YOUNGSTOWN -- Actor Aidan Quinn will be the first artist to visit Youngstown State University's College of Fine and Performing Arts with support from a new endowment, the Dr. Earle and Ida Cliffe Fund. Quinn will conduct a workshop with theater students on Sept. 28 and will attend a public reception and interview session that evening at Austintown Movies 3, in Austintown Plaza, 6000 Mahoning Ave. The workshop is private. Tickets to the Austintown event are $25. YSU students and members of the local film advocacy group The Flick Clique may buy tickets for $20. A local visit by actor Steve Buscemi that was anticipated this month is being rescheduled.
Benefit car cruise set
CANFIELD -- Cars and motorcycles will be welcomed at the fourth annual Joshua Walker Benefit Car Cruise from 2-8 p.m. Sept. 29 at Emmanuel Ministries, 6512 Kirk Road. Participants will be eligible for door prizes, dash plaques and trophies. A DJ will provide music, and there will be a raffle, Chinese auction, bake sale and hay rides.
An account has been established at Metropolitan Bank for Joshua, age 5, who has difficulty walking, talking, chewing and swallowing because of the genetic illness metachromatic leukodystrophy.
Interactive 'Music'
PITTSBURGH -- "Sing-A-Long Sound of Music," an interactive experience, will be from Oct. 2-6 at Byham Theater, 6th Street at Fort Duquesne Boulevard. It features a new print of the movie and subtitles, so the audience can sing along. Admission is $20 for adults or $10 for children under age 12. Honoring St. Hildegard
CLEVELAND -- On Sept. 17, the Ursuline College and the Cleveland Institute of Music will sponsor a concert celebrating the feast day of St. Hildegard, a 12th century abbess, healer, writer, artist and composer. She founded two monasteries, wrote six books, as well as poems and songs. The concert will be in The Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity at the Ursuline Educational Center, Pepper Pike, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature composer, Margaret Brouwer, and newly formed group, "The Connections," consisting of vocalists, cellist, clarinet and percussion.
The concert will also include guest appearances by Persian, African and Klezmer musicians as well as the music of Hildegard and music composed by Ms. Brouwer using Hildegard's words. Tickets can be bought at the door with general admission $10, seniors $8, students $5. Call (440) 646-8355.
