AUSTINTOWN -- Police are looking for a man who brandished a metal object and robbed Sleep Inn on Interstate Boulevard early today.
A Sleep Inn clerk told police that the man came into the motel at about 3 a.m. and asked about room rates. The man then pulled out a metal object covered by a black cloth and told the clerk to hand over the money from the cash register.
The clerk gave the man the drawer, which contained an unspecified amount of money. The man then ran out of the motel, got into a white pickup truck and drove away.
The clerk said he couldn't determine if the object in the cloth was a knife or a gun.
Bone-marrow donors
VIENNA -- The C.W. Bill Young/Department of Defense Marrow Donor Program is registering potential bone-marrow donors for the National Marrow Donor Program today until 3 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station fitness center.
The drive is open to active-duty personnel and their immediate family members, Department of Defense civilian personnel, Coast Guard, National Guard and reservists who are between the ages of 18 and 60 and in good health. Bone marrow is not taken at the drive.
House burglarized
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Quinn Street man who had been out of town for a few days returned Thursday and found that his home had been burglarized and a variety of items were stolen.
The homeowner reported missing four pair of men's shoes, one refrigerator, two end tables, a cassette deck, color TV and stand, microwave, iron, clippers, ironing board, VCR, 50 to 75 VCR tapes, assorted men's clothing and a portable CD.
Shoplifters reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- The manager of Sparkle Market on Mahoning Avenue got a license plate number of the getaway car he said a man and a woman used after shoplifting Thursday afternoon.
The pair ran out of the store with at least $50 worth of candy and two steaks worth $15, reports show. Police have a description of the suspects and address for the owner of the car.
Food mart robbed
GIRARD -- A robber took $104 from Shell Food Mart on South State Street early today.
A clerk told police a man walked in shortly before 1:45 a.m. with his hand under his shirt to indicate he had a weapon.
She opened the cash drawer and when another clerk appeared from a back room, the robber scooped the money from the drawer and fled.
