YOUNGSTOWN -- With an outstanding senior class, it's not surprising the Austintown Fitch High boys soccer team will play in the regional tournament tonight.
It was easy to look ahead and plan for the Cardinal Mooney team to return to regional competition.
But very few expected Warren JFK to get out of the sectional tournament, let alone the district.
Here they are, the three teams that chose various paths, to reach tonight's round of 16.
Fitch plays Hudson
In Division I, Fitch (13-5-1) will meet Hudson (16-0-2) at Ravenna High School at 7 p.m.
Senior forwards Sam Camens and Gus Martinez lead coach Rigo Castillo's Falcons, who drew the daunting task of playing Hudson, led by junior forward Xavier Balc Jr.
Jason Cicconi, Ryan Puskas, Evan Mikula and junior goalie Pat Passewitz must be at the top of their game against the Explorers, who reached the state semifinals last year.
Castillo has coached Fitch for 11 seasons and is in the regional for the second time. Hudson is coached by Mike Payne and the Explorers feature senior Taylor Finseth, midfielder Robbie Strachan and stopper Louie Rolko.
Hudson was tied with Mentor for first in the state in the final coaches poll. During the season those teams played to a 1-1 tie in front of 2,000 fans. Fitch was unranked.
In Div. II, Mooney (17-2) collides with Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (10-7-2) at Lyndhurst Brush High at 7 p.m.
Mooney returns much of last year's squad which played in the Div. III regional including sophomore Kiki Willis and senior Alex Simon, a couple of all-state picks.
Lenny Krispinsky coaches Mooney, ranked sixth in the state.
Mooney senior Tim Reigrut has pitched 21 shutouts in goal over two seasons. The Cardinals are led by defenders Mike Hernan, Josh Werning and junior Christo Frangopoulos.
Willis has scored 34 goals, but is well supported by senior Pat Walker (23 goals) and Mark Seddon (12).
Unexpected
In Div. III, Warren JFK (5-13-1) won just once during the year -- by forfeit -- before running the table in the post-season.
Coach Lou Cali sent a young, inexperienced team out in August but the Eagles matured and are in the regional for the first time in school history.
JFK tangles with Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (14-3-2) at West Branch High School at 7 p.m.
CVCA was ranked fourth in the state.
Giovane Ciuba and Brian Cullivan scored as the Eagles blanked second-seeded Maplewood 2-0 in the district semifinal and then topped Badger 4-3 in a shootout.
Ryan Marko and sophomore Kyle Schimley had assists against Maplewood. Schimley leads the Eagles with seven goals.
Sophomore Brian Wolnik defends the goal for JFK.
