Woman dies after assault in her home

ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- A woman died after being attacked and sexually assaulted in her apartment, police said.
Martha Miller, 45, of Erie was attacked between midnight and 1 a.m. Saturday inside her apartment, Erie police said. She died shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday after undergoing several hours of surgery at St. Vincent Health Center.
Police were not able to talk to Miller before she died and had not charged anyone as of Sunday afternoon.
Henry King, who said he lives upstairs from Miller, said he returned home about 12:50 a.m. on Saturday and heard "pots and pans slamming" and voices from inside Miller's apartment.
After knocking on the door to no answer and threatening to kick it in, King said, a man inside Miller's apartment opened the door. Another man was inside the apartment cooking in a small pan, King said.
"That first guy took off, but the other guy was still in there," King said. "I told him to get the hell out of [Miller's] apartment, and he said he was going to kill me. After a couple of minutes of us talking, he finally left."
King said he then saw Miller laying on the floor between the bedroom and bathroom and tried talking to her before calling 911.
