Wireless-phone project
YOUNGSTOWN -- Unwanted wireless phones can be donated to Sprint Project Connect at a local Sprint store or Easter Seals office to support people with disabilities. Phones will be either recycled or resold, and 100 percent of the net proceeds will be shared between Easter Seals, the National Organization on Disability and the Wireless Foundation. Free flu shots offered
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Health Department will administer flu shots from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the health department, 7360 state Route 45. The shots are restricted to county residents who are 65 and older and those who have a chronic illness or compromised immune system. There is no charge, but donations are welcome. K-9's for Compassion
YOUNGSTOWN -- K-9's for Compassion will evaluate potential animal/handler teams from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10 at St. Elizabeth Health Center. By appointment only, the evaluation involves a 19-step test for obedience and aptitude. K-9's for Compassion animals go to nursing homes and hospitals to do animal-assisted activity and therapy with patients. Call Katie Squibbs at (330) 534-2001 for more information.
Vegetarianism talk
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Michael Greger, a nationally recognized speaker and author about public health and social justice issues, will speak about the health and nutrition benefits of a vegetarian/vegan diet at 6 p.m. Monday at Kilcawley Center's Room 2068. Dr. Greger, a general practitioner specializing in vegetarian nutrition, is also Farm Sanctuary's chief investigator on mad cow disease.
New institute members
PITTSBURGH -- Faculty members representing the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine-affiliated Magee-Women's Research Institute and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic are among 65 new members of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the 1,358-member National Academies, which includes the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the National Research Council.
Eye collection center
CLEVELAND -- The Foundation Fighting Blindness, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to find the causes, treatments, prevention and cures for inherited retinal diseases, has chosen The Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute to host the foundation's collection center for eyes donated by individuals across the United States for blindness research. Before moving to The Cleveland Clinic, the collection center was located in Philadelphia. Stroke seminar
CLEVELAND -- The American Stroke Association is hosting the Northern Ohio Regional Stroke Seminar on Nov. 6, at Four Points Sheraton hotel, 5300 Rockside Road. The seminar, from 5 to 9 p.m., includes presentations by Cleveland-area stroke specialists Dr. Anthony Furlan, Cleveland Clinic Foundation; Dr. Warren Selman, University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University; and Dr. Irene Katzan, Cleveland Clinic Foundation and MetroHealth Medical Center. They will discuss stroke protocols and stroke treatment throughout northern Ohio. The seminar is free, CMEs and CEUs are available, and dinner is provided. Representatives from hospitals throughout Northeast Ohio also will participate.

Aetna, Forum pact
RICHFIELD -- Aetna and Forum Health have signed a two-year agreement to provide medical and surgical services to Aetna's 30,000 members in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Forum Health hospitals are: Northside Medical Center and Tod Children's Hospital in Youngstown, and Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Howland.
Hospital receives $4M
AKRON -- With a $4 million gift, Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron has endowed its Pediatric Palliative Care Program, which provides care to children with any life-threatening or terminal illness. The gift, made by an area family who prefers to remain anonymous, is the largest single gift ever given to Children's Hospital.
Halloween event
LIBERTY -- Colonial Manor Care Center, 196 Colonial Drive, will hold its annual Halloween trick or treat and pumpkin-decorating contest at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the dining room.
Children from area grade schools and Scout troops will decorate pumpkins that will be judged Monday. Prizes will be awarded in age categories from 6 to 8 years old, 9 and 10, 11 and 12 and adult.
Residents will distribute candy to children in costume and children must be accompanied by an adult.
