GM orders Saturday production
THE VINDICATOR, YOUNGSTOWN
LORDSTOWN -- General Motors has ordered production on another Saturday at the Lordstown Assembly Plant because of strong sales of cars produced there.
All three shifts at the plant are scheduled to work Nov. 23, said United Auto Workers Local 1112.
The plant already had been scheduled to work three Saturdays -- this Saturday, Nov. 9 and Dec. 14. The plant worked overtime on occasional Saturdays earlier this year.
The plant makes Chevrolet Cavaliers and Pontiac Sunfires.
The union also said Discovery Channel is going to document the two-year modernization of the plant for a show on its cable network. It is working with a local company to film the process and interview people at the plant.
GM has approved a $550 million upgrade of the assembly and fabrication plants as it prepares for its next generation of small cars.
Union and company officials at the assembly plant this week signed final engineering blueprints for the plant remodeling. The plan calls for a new paint shop to be built next to the assembly plant, new body shop equipment and a rerouted production line so the Cavaliers and Sunfires can continue to be made during the construction work.
