Fire destroys Fennell Road home in Shenango Township
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the modular home of Robert and Kathy Cantrell at 147 Fennell Road in Shenango Township.
Fire Chief Ronald Ziglear said no one was home when the blaze broke out around 12:45 p.m. Thursday.
Kathy Cantrell left the house around 7:45 a.m. and her husband left around 9:45 a.m., Ziglear said.
A neighbor passing by spotted the blaze and alerted fire authorities, Ziglear said, adding that there was heavy smoke coming form the one-story structure when fire crews reached the scene.
Firefighters were hampered by a lack of fire hydrants in that area, he said, explaining that water had to be hauled to the scene in tanker trucks.
Firefighters from West Middlesex, Pulaski and New Wilmington assisted Shenango Township.
Ziglear said a state police fire marshal was called in to help pinpoint the cause of the fire which is believed to have started in the kitchen area.
Ziglear said the house and contents are expected to be a total loss although he had no damage estimate.
The family does have insurance and the American Red Cross is assisting them, he said.
