PREP SOCCER JFK, Badger boys to battle in Division III
Howland's girls vaulted into the district title game after eliminating North Canton Hoover.
MECCA -- The Warren Kennedy High boys soccer team continued its amazing postseason run Tuesday.
On the strength of goals by Giovane Ciuba and Brian Cullivan, the Eagles blanked second-seeded Maplewood 2-0 in a Division III district semifinal.
JFK won just once, by forfeit, during the season but now is 3-0 in the tournament.
Ryan Marko and Kyle Schimley had assists and Brian Wolnik saved 12 shots for the Eagles (4-13-1).
Jeremy Mohorick saved nine shots for the Rockets (13-4-1), who blanked JFK 1-0 during the regular season.
JFK will play at Badger on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the district championship.
Badger 2, Lordstown 0
KINSMAN -- Nathan Arnold and Nathan Raught each had a goal and an assist for the Braves (8-11).
Badger took 25 shots, while Lordstown, seeded third, got off just three. The Braves led 1-0 at the half.
Girls
NORTH CANTON -- For the third time this year, the Howland and Poland girls soccer teams will meet after the Tigers beat North Canton Hoover 4-2 in a shootout in a Div. I district semifinal Tuesday.
Saturday at 7 p.m., Howland will play at Poland for the district championship.
During Metro Athletic Conference play, Poland defeated Howland 3-2 and tied 2-2.
Fourth-seeded Howland (11-2-6) and the Vikings (10-4-3) were tied 0-0 after regulation and were still in a scoreless stalemate after their 20-minute overtime.
Darcy Quinlan, Sarah Mangiarelli, Alissa Thomas and Allyson Hovance scored for Howland in the shootout.
Goaltender Amy Cornicelli blocked two shots in the Howland goal during the shootout. She finished with 15 saves.
Hoover was the second seed in the tournament. The Vikings took more shots, 24-17, and had more corner kicks, 6-1.
Under coach Gary Anderson, now in his ninth season, Howland opened the year 0-2 but has a 17-match unbeaten streak.
