LISBON -- Top-seeded Windham High and unseeded Jackson-Milton will meet for the Division IV district volleyball championship Thursday at 7 p.m. at Lisbon's David Anderson High School.
Jackson-Milton earned its spot the hard way, rallying for the fifth time this season to eliminate Bristol 2-15, 15-4 and 15-9 in Tuesday's district semifinal match.
Windham ended Leetonia's season, 15-7, 15-4.
Jackson-Milton-Bristol
The third game was closely contested with Bristol holding a 8-7 margin. Jackson-Milton (15-8) used an 8-1 surge to prevail.
"We've had quite a few comebacks this season," Jackson-Milton coach Sue Prozy said. "The girls were determined tonight and showed a lot of heart."
Bristol (15-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game. After the Bluejays scored a point, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to pull away.
In the second set, Jackson-Milton started its comeback, taking a 5-0 lead. The senior-laden lineup took charge, building a 9-3 lead and the Panthers couldn't recover.
"We started out rocky, didn't serve well and just made too many errors in the first game," Prozy said. "Then we got more aggressive."
First-year Bristol coach Megan Reilly was unhappy with her team's serving in the second and third games.
"But regardless of the outcome, we're thrilled because this is the furthest a Bristol team has got in school history," Reilly said.
Corey Velk led the Bluejays with seven points, three aces and seven kills. Erika Stamm had 24 assists and 51 sets, while Ashley Lautzenheiser had four blocks.
Amy Weeks scored seven points for Bristol. Ashley Rasmussen had 27 assists, 83 sets and 10 digs. Shannon Burchett had 13 kills and two aces. Megan Billino had seven kills and four blocks.
Windham-Leetonia
Leetonia (9-13) held a 3-2 lead in its first game against Windham, but the Blue Bombers (19-4) quickly took control and rolled for the victory.
Windham took a 3-2 lead in the second game and then went on an 11-0 run to put Leetonia away.
"We served a lot better in the second game," Windham coach Michael Chaffee, an Ursuline High graduate, said. "Before the match, a couple of our girls said Leetonia's the team that beat our basketball team in the district final last year."
Leetonia coach Jerry Fiehler added, "Windham is pretty good all around and one of the best teams we faced this season.
"Our serving was terrible," he said. "Our passing wasn't what it should have been and we weren't as aggressive as we should have been."
Ali Roach paced the Blue Bombers with 11 points, nine assists, five aces and six kills. Megan Viebranz had seven points and two blocks, Lauren Weger nine assists and Tabitha Pennington six kills.
Keri Chepke led the Bears with seven points and three aces. Bri Duko had three assists and 20 sets and Jessica Deville had two kills and eight blocks.
