Retrial continues for man sentenced in girlfriend's death

YOUNGSTOWN -- Testimony continues today in the retrial of a Youngstown man sentenced to life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend.
Christopher Scott was 18 when a jury in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court convicted him of aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder in December 1997.
Judge Maureen Cronin sentenced Scott to life in prison, but the 7th District Court of Appeals overturned the conviction and ordered a new trial.
Scott is accused of shooting 16-year-old Lori Townsend through the window of a car in which she was a passenger in January 1997. He also is charged with the attempted murder of Albert Byrd, who was with Townsend in the car on the night of the shooting.
According to testimony in the first trial, the bullet apparently was intended for Byrd.
Byrd testified Monday that he saw Scott point a shotgun at the car seconds before a bullet hit Townsend in the face. He also testified that he had smoked marijuana earlier in the evening.
