Satcher to speak at NEOUCOM
ROOTSTOWN -- Dr. David Satcher, who served as U.S. surgeon general during both the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations, will share his opinions and experiences in a speech at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Dr. Satcher's presentation, titled "Politics, Opinions and Public Health: Parting Words from a Surgeon General,'' is billed as a candid discussion of how federal policy affects public health. Dr. Satcher, who now directs the National Center for Primary Care, based at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, was surgeon general from February 1998 until February 2002.
An update on MS scheduled for Tuesday
SEBRING -- "MS Research and Medications" will be the title of an educational program from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday in Murphy Auditorium at the Copeland Oaks retirement community, 715 Johnson Road. The presenter will be Melody Halsey, volunteer research advocate for the Ohio Buckeye Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Workshop on wellnessat Kent-Trumbull
CHAMPION -- The American Cancer Society and nine other agencies are sponsoring a free workshop on good nutrition and physical activity from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Kent State University Trumbull Campus. Jack Theil, a Howland physical education teacher, will discuss music and fitness. Barbara Pryor, of the Ohio Department of Health, will discuss healthy eating in the school environment. "There is scientific proof that proper nutrition and physical activity reduces your risk of cancer," said Karen Bulford, the society's local cancer control director. Low-cost CAT scans
BOARDMAN -- Low-cost mobile CAT scans for cancer and coronary disease will be offered from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Poland United Methodist Church, 1940 Boardman-Poland Road. The studies will be performed at $199 per test by Catscan 2000 of Clearwater, Fla., the nation's largest mobile CAT scan service. They are intended for people who have never been treated for heart disease or cancer and have no significant disease symptoms, but who have risk factors, such as cigarette smoking, obesity or a family history of heart attacks or cancer. Flu shots scheduled
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Health Department will offer flu shots for $10 and pneumonia shots for $15 at several clinic sessions in the coming weeks. A shot clinic will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 28 in city council chambers at city hall, 26 S. Phelps St. The other sessions will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 4 at the Italian American War Veterans Post, 115 S. Meridian Road; Nov. 7 at the YMCA, 17 N. Champion St.; and Nov. 14 at the YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave.
