Lawsuit filed in 2000 death at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- The mother of a 23-year-old man who died while skateboarding two years ago at Youngstown State University is suing the university and three contractors.
Melissa Metz of Third Street, Campbell, is seeking unspecified damages in the suit, filed Thursday afternoon in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. The case is assigned to Judge Jack Durkin.
According to court documents, Metz is the mother of George Hudzik III, a YSU student who died of a head injury he sustained in a skateboarding accident Oct. 21, 2000, at the university.
The suit says Hudzik was riding his skateboard on university property when it struck a curb and he was thrown off. It says the contractors were negligent for not tapering the edge of the curb toward the sidewalk and by positioning the sidewalk so that it leads pedestrians directly to the curb.
The university was negligent for not warning Hudzik about the "inherently dangerous condition," the suit says.
Also named as defendants are Mike Coates Construction Company of Niles, Russell D. Beatty & amp; Associates of Youngstown, and John A. Sybrant & amp; Associates of Youngstown.
