FAST FACTS Philomena Jurey
Philomena Jurey will be at the New Castle Public Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to talk about and sign copies of her new book, "Bella Giornata and Elbow Grease: Remembering Papa and Mama, the Sparanos of New Castle, Pennsylvania." Some facts about her background:
Jurey graduated from New Castle High School in 1945 and received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1949.
She worked as a reporter from 1952 to 1958 for The Vindicator before she and her husband, Jack , former labor editor of The Vindicator, moved to Washington, D.C.
Jurey went onto work for the London Daily Telegraph's Washington, D.C., bureau before starting her 28-year career with Voice of America. She retired from VOA in 1989 after serving as editor-in-chief.
Jurey now spends her time reading for the blind and doing volunteer work.
Copies of her new book are on sale at the Lawrence County Historical Society for $14.95. Copies will be on sale Saturday at the library for $12.
