Edwards honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State senior Will Edwards was named the Horizon League's male cross country athlete of the week for the period ending Oct. 13.
Edwards earned second-team All-Ohio honors at the All-Ohio Championships by running a 12th-place 8k time of 26:19. He finished first for the Penguins for the fifth consecutive race, leading the team to a fourth-place finish.
Folk 44th inChicago Marathon
CHICAGO -- Matt Folk, an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Youngstown State, finished 44th overall in the Chicago Marathon last weekend. Over 37,000 runners competed.
Folk, 26, a resident of Boardman, completed the 26.2 miles in 2 hours, 24.42 minutes.

Former Chaneyplayers welcome
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ed Matey, a former football coach at Chaney High, will be honored Thursday at halftime of the Cowboys' 7 p.m. game against Canton Timken at Stambaugh Stadium.
Former Chaney players are being asked to join the on-field ceremony for Matey, who retired after 35 years as a coach, athletic director and assistant principal.

Helle leads
GIRARD -- Girard High senior receiver Dustin Helle had six catches for 153 yards and three touchdowns in the Indians' 47-28 victory over LaBrae last weekend.
Helle was omitted from the weekend leaders published Tuesday.
Maz, Dorsettat card show
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. -- Hall of famers Bill Mazeroski and Tony Dorsett will headline the J. Paul Sports Promotions' sportscards and memorabilia show Oct. 25-27 at Robert Morris University.
Show hours are from 4-9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
The show's featured autograph guest on Friday will be former Pittsburgh Pirate Bobby Del Greco, who will sign from 6-8 p.m.
Dorsett, the former NFL great from Beaver County, will sign from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday with former Pirate Rick Reuschel.
Also signing Saturday from 1-3 p.m. will be 1960 World Series MVP Bobby Richardson and former Yankee teammate Luis Arroyo, and from 4-6 p.m. will be former Pirates Manny Sanguillen and Dave Ricketts.
Mazeroski, the former Pirate great, will sign from 2-4 p.m. Sunday. NFL hall of famer Hugh McElhenny and former Pirate Bert Blyleven also will be in attendance to sign autographs.
Admission is $4 per day. A three-day pass for $9 is also available. Children under age 12 are free.
Mercer seasonconcludes Saturday
MERCER, Pa. -- The 2002 season at Mercer Raceway Park will conclude on Saturday with the rescheduled portion of the Little Guy Nationals from Oct. 4.
On the card will be the Stock Cars, Micro Sprints, and Modified Lites (Dwarf Cars).
The Stock Car portion of the event will headline the show with a 30-lap $1,000 to-win, $75 to-start feature.
Those that have rain checks and pit bands can simply trade in for new ones. New cars will be permitted to compete. There is a $25 pre-entry fee by Oct. 18 or $35 on race day for cars that did not compete on the initial show. Pit passes are $25. Adult admission is $13.
The Family Pass is $30. Students 6-15 are $5. Children 5 and under are free.
Pit gates will open by 12:30 p.m. Grandstands will open at 1:30 p.m. Hot laps are slated for 3 p.m. Racing will begin at 4 p.m.
In event of rain, the rain date is Sunday with times beginning one hour earlier. If both days would rain out, Oct. 26-27 would be the next rain date.
Zumpella is first
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Struthers High graduate Joe Zumpella, a junior at Allegheny College, finished first in the Rochester (N.Y.) Shootout, winning on the third playoff hole at Irondequoit Country Club.
Zumpella shot a two-day total of 147 (70-77), leading the Gators to first place in the eight-team field.
