Council changes YWCA property zoning

SALEM -- City council voted to change the zoning of the YWCA property at 364 N. Lincoln Ave. from residential to commercial.
No one spoke against the change at a public hearing before the council meeting.
Mary Patterson of the YWCA spoke in favor of the zoning change, stating that the YWCA has been a good neighbor and the Salem Area Visiting Nurses Association would be as well. The nurses association is moving into the YWCA property. The YWCA is moving to the new Salem Community Center on Ellsworth Avenue.
In other business, Don Weingart, city utilities superintendent, said the $1.4 million sewer project on the city's north side is complete except for grass seeding and one coat of paving, both of which will be completed in the spring.
He said 65 of 132 residents have hired contractors and connected to the city sewer system, which shows the need for the project.
The new sewer service was extended to the Shady Lane area off North Lincoln Avenue.
