Stray cats get comfortable in small town

EAST CONEMAUGH, Pa. (AP) -- To be a police officer here, you have to know how to herd cats -- literally.
Police officers in East Conemaugh, a borough of 1,250 residents about 55 miles east of Pittsburgh, are on patrol for feral cats roaming the streets, prowling alleys and bedding down wherever they can.
"We are definitely having a problem with them," said police Capt. Bill Gustkey. "It seems like they're having litters and then their litters are having litters."
The problem is so bad borough officials have ordered police to spend time setting and checking cat traps.
Police say they have caught about a dozen stray cats, which have been turned over to the Cambria County Humane Society, and there are more yet.
Police officials are at a loss to figure out where the cats are coming from but said residents can help run them out of town.
"If they wouldn't feed them, they wouldn't come back," Gustkey said.
