The Youngstown connection is doubly strong in a production of Handel's opera "Julius Caesar" at Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Ind. Michael Match of Youngstown will portray Sextus in the show, which opens Oct. 25 for two weekends. Conducting the university orchestra will be David Effron, a professor of music and former musical director of Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.
Journalism award
CNNfn anchor Jan Hopkins, a Warren native, is the winner of the 2002 Financial Journalism Award in Lifetime Achievement for Women. The Women's Economic Roundtable will honor Hopkins on Tuesday at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York.
Hopkins is an anchor for "Street Sweep," CNNfn's weekday market wrap-up program, and a substitute anchor for "Lou Dobbs Moneyline."
Hopkins joined CNN Business News in November 1984 as a correspondent, and has anchored such programs as CNN's "Managing with Jan Hopkins," "Movers with Jan Hopkins" and CNNfn's "Capital Ideas." In October 1987, she reported live from the New York Stock Exchange during coverage of the market downturn, for which CNN received its first Peabody Award.
Hopkins graduated from Hiram College and worked at WKBN-TV Channel 27 from 1977 to 1980.
Get 'Hooked on Love'at Westminster
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- There's laughter and drama in store for those who attend "Hooked On Love," a romantic comedy that will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday in Orr Auditorium at Westminster College. The fun exploration of relationships has its serious side, too, with messages about respect for oneself and earning other people's respect. A question and answer session will follow the performance, and the actors will discuss the reality of AIDS. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the college's Office of Diversity Services. Packard band events
WARREN -- W.D. Packard Band's free Sweetest Day Dance will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at W.D. Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. N.W. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a cash bar.
Also scheduled by the band is a free concert to be presented at 3 p.m. next Sunday at the hall with Donald W. Byo as conductor. The "Music for a Sunday Afternoon" concert will feature Misook Yun, soprano.
Future programs include a Veterans Day concert Nov. 10 and a Christmas concert Dec. 8.
Vienna Philharmonic
CLEVELAND -- It's been 35 years since Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra appeared here, but that dry spell will end when the famed ensemble performs March 2 at Severance Hall. Nikolaus Harnoncourt will conduct the orchestra as it plays Schubert's Symphony No. 4 and Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 ("From the New World"). Ticket prices are from $40 to $160.
