YOUNGSTOWN ZIONIST Harshman to receive honors from district



The honoree has been involved in numerous civic and religious organizations in the Youngstown area.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Zionist District will honor Florence Harshman for her lifetime contributions to Israel, Zionism and community service.
The public event will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Temple Rodef Sholom, Elm Street and Woodbine Avenue, on the city's North Side.
She will receive the coveted Justice Louis D. Brandeis Award and the K'far Silver Scholarship Plaque.
Education
Harshman has been a Jewish community leader for many years. Born and raised in New York City, she came to Youngstown in 1949, she received a bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University and a master's degree in counseling from Kent State University.
In 1986, Harshman served as the Israel Bond chairwoman. She is past president of Jewish Family Services and served as general campaign co-chairwoman of the Youngstown Federation Women's Division in 1992 and 1993.
She has provided leadership in a number of Jewish organizations, including Hadassah; Zionist Organization of America, in which she is a lifetime member; Council of Jewish Women; Jewish Women International; past president of NA'AMAT; secretary of Youngstown Area Jewish Federation; and Rodef Sholom.
She serves as a trustee for Partnership 2000, which promotes joint projects between the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and Western Galilee in Israel.
City schools
A longtime civic leader, Harshman was a social worker in the Youngstown City Schools for more than 25 years, where she conducted chemical and sexual abuse prevention programs.
She has served as the president of the Youngstown Reading Council and Send-A-Kid-to-Camp and served on boards of United Way Planning Council, Burdman Group, Sojourner House for Battered Persons, Youngstown Area Urban League and the Mental Health Association. She is a life member of the YSU Alumni Association.
In 1986, Harshman was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame. She received the B'nai B'rith Guardian of the Menorah Award in 1991, the Woman of Valor Award in 1997 and the Israel Bond Association Award in 1999.
Her family
She is the widow of Abe Harshman. She has three daughters, Bonnie Cole, Judy Nisman and Janet Agassi, and eight grandchildren.
