TENNIS Spartans duo Peretti, Berry earn return to state event
A Canfield freshman and a Poland doubles team also will compete in Columbus.
ROCKY RIVER -- For the third straight year, Boardman High's Gina Peretti and Stephanie Berry have earned a berth for the Division I state tennis tournament.
They did that with two wins in the doubles competition at the district tournament Thursday at Tri-City Park courts.
The Spartans' duo defeated Kim Thomson and Abby Cahill of Strongsville, 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round and then topped Megan Gray and Carley Newman of Revere, 6-2, 6-1.
Saturday in the semifinals, Peretti and Berry will take on Gina Tamburro and Christie Harrison of Massillon Jackson .
Canfield High School freshman Renee Lesnett also will compete at state in Div. I singles after winning twice in the district at Tri-City Park.
Lesnett defeated Bridget Larson of Hudson 6-1, 6-0, then eliminated Mia Shy of Euclid 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Saturday in the semifinals, Lesnett will meet Jacqueline Lee of GlenOak.
Another Canfield freshman, Rachel McGowan, was defeated by Stephanie Fosnight of Ravenna in the first round, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Division II
MASSILLON -- The Poland doubles team of Erin Bennett and Stephanie Kobuch have earned a spot for next week's Div. II state tournament.
They did that by winning two matches in district competition at Jackson Park courts.
The Poland duo defeated Ashley Baldev and Claire Brittian of Akron Hoban, 6-0, 6-2, and Lindsey Marsh and Morgan Marsh of Medina Highland, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. In semifinal tennis Saturday at 9 a.m. Bennett and Kobuch will face Lindsey Fleissner and Ashley Kurtz of Walsh Jesuit.
Ashley Kelly and Barbie McDonald of West Branch lost a first-round match to Julie Frase and Marissa Hollinger of Canton South, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Cardinal Mooney's Becca Brocker and Britini Brocker were beaten by Tanya Somanader and Rachel Goffman of Orange 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Ursuline's Lisa Fedina and Anna Lungu lost to Lauren Clarke and Jenny Martin of Hathaway Brown, 6-1, 6-0.
In first round singles competition, Tatyana Volochkovich of East Palestine was defeated by Charity Denny of Canton South, 6-2, 6-2; Ashley Hoff of Liberty was defeated by Jaclyn Spirtos of Highland, 6-2, 6-2; Emily Berry of Struthers was defeated by Brooke Nord of Walsh Jesuit, 6-0, 6-0; and Karly Fedina of Mooney was defeated by Theresa Mellon of Canton Central Catholic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
