Division I-III
Where: Malone College, Canton.
Area teams: (Div. I) Fitch, Boardman, Canfield, Howland, Warren Harding. (Div. III) Columbiana, Lisbon, Leetonia, Southern, United.
Div. I regional qualifiers: Top five teams and individuals in top 20 not on a qualifying team advance to next week's Boardman regional.
Div. III regional qualifiers: Top four teams and individuals in top 16 not on a qualifying team.
Notebook: In Div. I, Boardman junior Brittany Durkin placed an area-best ninth at last year's district meet. Elaine Reedy and Amber Gallagher of Fitch, Boardman's Monica Cuevas and Canfield's Mary Boak, Hayley Rammuno and Jenna Donofrio are among the area's best in the girls race. Justin Setty and Ray Butler of Fitch, Nick Frankel of Canfield, Russ Waller of Boardman and Ryan Trapp of Howland will contend in the boys race. Massilon Jackson is defending champ for both crowns. In Div. III, Leetonia's Danny Simpson placed sixth last year and teammate Melissa Dipanfilo placed 11th last year. Lisbon's Lindsay Brickner was eighth.
Division II-III
Where: Trumbull County Fairgrounds, Bazetta.
Area teams: (Div. II) Brookfield, Mooney, Champion, East Palestine, Girard, Hubbard, Liberty, Poland, Salem, Southeast, Struthers, Ursuline, West Branch. (Div. III) Badger, Bristol, Southington, Jackson-Milton, Warren JFK, LaBrae, Lordstown, Maplewood, McDonald, Mineral Ridge, South Range, Springfield, Western Reserve.
Div. II regional qualifiers: Top five teams and individuals in top 20 not on qualifying team.
Div. III regional qualifiers: Top four teams and individuals in top 16 not on a qualifying team.
Notebook: In Div. II, Mooney's Erik Moss placed 11th last year to lead the Cardinals to a second-place finish in the boys race. Champion's girls edged Girard for the 2001 title and the Golden Flashes return all of those runners for this year's race. West Branch senior Lisa Davies will be the girl to beat. West Branch senior Megan Cingcade, Mooney senior Val Zajac, Southeast's Raina Keppler, Champion's Marlena Wolfe, Danielle Bafunno and Michelle Bafunno, Struthers' Candice Eagon, Hubbard's Mary Sivulich and Girard's Jen Maravola will contend. In Div. III, Maplewood and McDonald, the state's top two boys teams, will battle for the top spot. Maplewood returns six of its seven runners from last season, while McDonald returns four. Jackson-Milton's Luke McCluggage is one to watch. Maplewood's Paul Moser won the race last year. Twin sisters Jennifer and Jessica Wenholdwill lead McDonald, which is expected to repeat in the girls race.
