Fight added
CHESTER, W.Va. -- A boxing match between top-ranked contender Juan Gomez-Trinidad and former world champion Raul Balbi has been added to a card at Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort on Nov. 9.
They will fight in a 10-round lightweight battle on the pay-per-view card.

Titans' captains
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Westminster College men's and women's swimming teams have selected team captains.
Senior Craig Guthoerl and Jim Mann are the captains of the men's team while the women picked seniors Stefanie King and Amanda Zelechoski.
Zumpella third
MEADVILLE -- Golfer Joe Zumpella of Struthers, a junior with Allegheny College, shot a 74 to finish third in the Guy Kuhn Invitational tournament at Meadville Country Club. Eighty golfers participated in the tournament won by Westminster. Allegheny finished second.
Special Olympics
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Special Olympics Pennsylvania will hold its western fall sectional championships Sunday at Slippery Rock University. As many as 300 athletes are scheduled to compete in bocce doubles, long distance running and walking, powerlifting, soccer and volleyball. Opening ceremonies are at 9:15 a.m. in Morrow Field House and closing ceremonies are set for 4:30 p.m. at the same location. Admission is free.

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon will return in 2003 but will not be offered a contract extension, and all but two of his coaches were fired or reassigned.

A-Rod gives back
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Texas Rangers All-Star shortstop Alex Rodriguez donated $3.9 million to the University of Miami's baseball program. The gift, paid in annual installments over six years, will be used to renovate the stadium -- which will then be called Alex Rodriguez Park.
Rodriguez grew up near the Miami campus.
NCAA president
INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA hired Indiana University president Myles Brand as its president and chief executive, ending a seven-month search for a new leader.
Brand will assume his new duties Jan. 1 and his contract will run through 2007.
Brand, 60, has been president at the university in Bloomington since 1994.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- With Michael Vick unable to finish practice, coach Dan Reeves selected Doug Johnson as the starting quarterback for Atlanta's game at New York on Sunday.
Logo change
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The founder of the National Women's Football League refused to switch the league's name at the NFL's request, but will change the title-game name and two team logos.
Catherine Masters said the league name is trademarked and that the NFL should have raised the issue a couple years ago instead of sending her a letter wishing the league good luck this past season.
Camby out
DENVER -- Denver Nuggets center Marcus Camby is out indefinitely following hip surgery, an injury his agent said should have been treated months ago.
He was hurt Feb. 1 playing for New York against Indiana when he landed hard on his side after colliding with Jermaine O'Neal on a layup attempt.

NEW YORK -- Latrell Sprewell filed a formal appeal with the New York Knicks over his $250,000 fine, the latest step in a process that could take more than two months to resolve.
New arena planned
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte has secured options on land needed for a downtown arena to host a new NBA team. It will cost about $42 million to acquire 13 acres needed to build the arena on East Trade Street, two blocks from the city's center.

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Lightning acquired Boyd Kane from the New York Rangers for Gordie Dwyer in a trade of left wings.
