WARREN -- A 24-year-old man, who pleaded guilty to charges of rape, aggravated burglary and kidnapping, has been sentenced to five years in prison by Judge W. Wyatt McKay in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
Christopher Fenton was accused by Girard police of entering a woman's Girard home March 1 and sexually assaulting her several times at knifepoint.
Her children were in the house at the time.
Maternity home event
LIBERTY -- New Life Maternity Home will have its annual fall banquet and silent auction Nov. 14 in the Holiday Inn MetroPlex at Belmont Avenue and Interstate 80.
The silent auction is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and the buffet dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m.

Weekend camp
WARREN -- Forum Health at Home Hospice is offering Camp Falling Leaf, a weekend camp for children ages 7 through teens who have experienced the death of a loved one in the past year.

Breast cancer speaker
NILES -- Eastwood Mall, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, is hosting a breast cancer balloon launch at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Linda Sticklemyer, nurse coordinator for the Center for Breast Health at Forum Health's Beeghly Medical Center in Boardman, will speak about mammography, and Brenda Rider, a breast cancer survivor, will sing her composition, "Rainbow of Ribbons."
Former official dies
WARREN -- Clark R. Law, who in 1971 became director of the Trumbull County Welfare Department, died of cancer Friday at his home in Reynoldsburg. He was 62.
The Arizona native and graduate of California State University in Los Angeles worked here for a year before moving to Columbus as director of the office of income maintenance for the state welfare department and later executive assistant.
In 1983 he left state government to become a lobbyist for the Ohio Hospital Assocation and in 1988 became CEO of the Association of Ohio Philanthropic Homes, Housing and Services for the Aging in Columbus.
Specialists hired
NEWTON FALLS -- The board of education hired two intervention specialists for $75 per day.
The contracts were awarded at Wednesday's meeting. Superintendent Linda J. Clapp said the intervention program is designed to identify children at risk and find the proper services for them and their families.
Gas line ruptures
SHARON, Pa. -- The Shenango Valley Community Library and several nearby businesses were evacuated briefly Wednesday when a crew working on the Dock Street truck access road ruptured a gas line near East State Street.
The sound of the escaping gas could be heard several blocks away.
Authorities ordered the evacuation of the library, The Wave, Helen Freed's bridal shop and The Herald newspaper around 10:40 a.m.
Homicide charges
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Alfred Paige, accused of inflicting injuries on an infant that resulted in the child's death 11 years later, was arraigned Wednesday on homicide charges and is being held in the Lawrence County jail without bond.
Paige, 38, who is serving time in state prison on an unrelated charge, is accused of fracturing the skull of 2-month-old Andre Tolbert, who died in May 2000. A recent autopsy determined his death was a result of the injuries.
Mobile home fire
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- An electrical problem in a home computer is being blamed for a fire that destroyed the mobile home of Bill and Tammy Hodge at Eckstrom Mobile Home Park, 347 Hadley Road, Hempfield Township, around 1 p.m. Wednesday.
The Hodges and their two children weren't home, but two dogs died in the fire.
