Theft-in-office charge
NILES -- A Girard woman is charged with fourth-degree felony theft in office.
Barbara A. Freeman of Louise Lane is charged with embezzling more than $5,000 over a three-year period as treasurer of Fairhaven Public Employees, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1992.
The thefts were discovered Sept. 13.
If convicted, Freeman, who is free on bond, faces 18 months in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 4 in Niles Municipal Court.
Report of money stolen
LIBERTY -- A McDonald man told police a female acquaintance took $1,400 in cash from him.
The 52-year-old Pittsburgh Avenue man said he met the woman Thursday night and they went to a motel room. The woman later left, and he noticed the cash missing from the pill bottle he kept it in.
Police found the woman and recovered $756. The man said he was satisfied with that.
Health commissioner
GIRARD -- James Dobson has been named the city's new health commissioner.
Dobson, who has been assistant commissioner, was named to the post Monday by the city board of health. He will be paid $43,260 the first year of his contract and $45,163 the second year.
The board accepted the resignation of Dr. James J. Enyeart, who was named Trumbull County health commissioner last month. Dr. Enyeart will serve as the city's medical director without pay because state law requires a medical director to be a medical doctor.
Aggravated robbery case
GIRARD -- Two 18-year-old Youngstown men have been bound over to the Trumbull County grand jury on aggravated robbery charges.
Craig T. Robinson of Shaw Avenue and Derrick K. Owens of Seneca Street waived their rights to a preliminary hearing Monday before municipal Judge Michael A. Bernard.
Owens also faces misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing official business.
They are accused of confronting a Roosevelt Avenue woman outside her home Sept. 26, putting a gun to her head and taking $10, a ring and her car keys.
Tax director sought
McDONALD -- The mayor is accepting applications for the part-time position of income tax director. Applications should include qualifications, employment history and references; mail before Nov. 12 to the municipal building, 451 Ohio Ave., McDonald 44437-1953.
Lions Club Fall Fest
McDONALD -- The McDonald Lions Club Annual Fall Fest will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Ramsey Pavilion on the village green at Ohio Avenue and Fifth Street.
Apples, pumpkins, corn stalks and bales of straw will be available for sale. Hayrides have been added this year. Crafters and local organizations will have tables at the pavilion.
Revitalization meeting
LIBERTY -- Liberty Business Association is sponsoring a round-table discussion, "How Can We Revitalize and Recreate the Belmont Avenue Business District?" on Wednesday at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex.
The evening begins with a mixer at 7 p.m., with the round table at 7:30.
Township officials and business owners will participate. Light refreshments will be served.

New-sign ceremony
LORDSTOWN -- A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the village's new sign along the Ohio Turnpike is set for 10 a.m. Friday.
The sign, bought by council to promote the village to industrial and commercial businesses, was erected earlier this month.
The ceremony is open to the public.
