TENNIS District tournament begins Thursday at two sites
Nine area schools will be competing in the two-day event.
The area will be represented by nine schools when district tennis begins Thursday in Rocky River and Massillon.
The Division I tournament will be held at 8:30 a.m. at Tri-City Park, while the Div. II field will compete at 9 a.m. at the Massillon Jackson Park courts.
Two rounds will be contested Thursday, while semifinals and finals will be played Saturday.
Boardman and Canfield will send girls in Div. I, while Cardinal Mooney, East Palestine, Liberty, Poland, Struthers, Ursuline and West Branch have qualified members in Div. II.
Div. I
Boardman's doubles team of Gina Peretti and Stephanie Berry is a top seed and will face Kim Thomson and Abby Cahill of Strongsville in a first-round Div. I match.
Also in Div. I, Canfield's Renee Lesnett and Rachel McGowan will compete in singles action. Lesnett, the third seed, will face Hudson's Bridget Larson, while the fourth-seeded McGowan will play Stephanie Fosnight of Ravenna.
Div. II
Four area players -- East Palestine's Tatyana Volochkovich, Cardinal Mooney's Karly Fedina, Liberty's Ashley Hoff and Struthers' Emily Berry -- will compete in Div. II singles action.
Volochkovich is a top seed and will play Canton South's Charita Denny; Fedina, a second seed, will play Canton Central Catholic's Theresa Mellion; Hoff, a third seed, will play Highland's Jaclyn Spirtos; and Berry, a fourth seed, will play Walsh Jesuit's Brooke Nord.
Four area doubles teams have qualified for districts, led by top-seed Erin Bennett and Stephanie Kobuch of Poland. They will play Akron Hoban's Ashley Baldev and Claire Brittain.
Cardinal Mooney's Becca Brocker and Britini Brocker, a second seed, will oppose Orange's Tanya Somanader and Rachel Goffman.
West Branch's third-seeded team of Ashley Kelly and Barbie McDonald will face Canton South's Julie Frase and Marissa Hollinger.
Ursuline's Lisa Fedina and Anna Lungu, a fourth seed, will play Lauren Clarke and Jenny Martin of Hathaway Brown.
